Hi

Is there any way to test actual coverage, signal strength, speeds etc. using a cell c prepaid simcard before taking the full 12/24month deal?

I know this is possible with 8ta to allow you to test your actual speeds etc before you sign the contract. Can this be done with cell c?

I prefer testing because according the 8ta coverage map my home is supposed to be covered - this was also confirmed by a sales rep, however when i tested with a prepaid sim i had such poor signal that the speeds were slower than my current 384kbps adsl line. I am looking at getting the new 10gig deal being launched by Cell C on 1 August, but I would like to test before signing any papers etc.

Thanks

Buy a prepaid sim at Pick n Pay for R1. RICA at Cell C or any other store. Recharge with R50 and you get 500 MByte to play with.

^ ^ ^ What he said...

The hard part is finding or borrowing a modem that is 900 UMTS compatible. Once you've got that, buy a Cell C starter pack at PnP or CNA.

Oh okay i see. Would it not work in a smartphone? Is the issue the 900umts frequency?

You can certainly use your SGS :) It will be limited to 7.2 mbit though. If you max it out (anything above 6 mbit/sec) then chances are you will get more speed with a 21 meg modem.

For the CellC fast connection, you need a (U)SIM and not the one you buy from Shoprite for R1,99. Call CellC and ask for the business section. A rep will come and see you and test the speed in your location. The rep can also show you how to connect your modem to the closest and best transmitter rather than what it thinks is best. Where I live in Plumstead, there is a CellC transmitter on top of the Home Affairs bldg in Wynberg, about 1.9km away.

I bought a Cell C sim card at CNA for 95c. I use it on my Cellphone and on my modem/dongle without any issues. It's the 128K power sim.
