Porsche 911 GT3 unveiled (manual ‘box optional)!

The new Porsche 911 GT3 has been unwrapped at the Geneva Motor Show and the German automaker says it delivers “motorsport-like performance” thanks to its lightweight construction and a high-revving naturally aspirated engine.

A manual variant will be available, but oddly enough only as an option (a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission PDK will be standard).

These days, all current 911s (apart from the R) are turbocharged, but in order to keep the 911 GT3 as “pure” as possible and to adhere to the GT3 Cup Car specifications, Porsche has opted to use a naturally aspirated 4,0-litre flat-six engine, which delivers 368 kW to the rear wheels.

In its standard PDK guise, the 911 GT3 will reach 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 3,4 seconds, while specifying the six-speed shifter will add half a second. The PDK model will top out at 318 km/h, while the manual will stretch to 320 km/h.

The chassis has been reworked to sit 25 mm lower than the standard 911 Carrera S and employs active rear-axle steering and a rear differential lock.

The interior also gains a few interesting items, such as the 918-sourced 360 mm steering wheel and electrically adjustable seats. A variety of bucket seat designs are available for those who wish to decrease the overall weight of the vehicle.

Orders for the 911 GT3 have already opened, with the local price sitting at R2,75-million, but the first models will arrive only in mid-September this year.

Even Porsche’s street-legal racecar, the 911 GT3, now comes with Apple CarPlay

Porsche has traditionally not emphasized creature comforts in its track-focused cars, even stripping out air-conditioning to keep the weight down. But the latest 911 GT3 – a model primarily aimed at track drivers who also want to drive the car to and from the circuit – now comes with CarPlay as standard.

The 2018 GT3 is as focused a driver’s car as ever, the 4-liter flat-six engine producing 500hp, hitting 0-60mph in 3.2 seconds and maxing out at 197mph. But when you’re paying upwards of $144k for a car, you probably want a bit of tech alongside the grunt.

Porsche doesn’t exactly highlight the CarPlay functionality, mentioning it in passing while focusing on an app that allows drivers to analyze their car’s performance, but it at least makes it into the specs – albeit with a spurious space.

In addition to the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) — which includes a navigation system capable of real-time traffic information and the Connect Plus Module including Apple Car Play [sic] — the Porsche Track Precision App is also included as standard equipment. Using this app, 911 GT3 drivers can display, record, and analyze detailed driving data on a smartphone.

Well-heeled drivers will, though, have to wait until the fall to get their hands on one. Pricing starts at $143,600 plus $1,000 delivery, but the company of course has additional options available at extra cost.

It follows the company adding CarPlay compatibility to the 2018 Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, that one with a massive 12.3-inch screen, and is the second sportscar announcement today to feature CarPlay support following the Honda Civic Type R.

PICS: Porsche's blistering 991.2 GT3

Porsche has unleashed it's latest sportscar - the 991.2 GT3. Sam Ayres, the Themotorist.co.za, tells us more.

Germany - The Porsche 911 GT3 is a car that's gone on leaps and bounds since it first graced the tarmac in 1999.

It is a track machine that is suitable for the road and because of this, the GT3 has become very popular and sort after, especially in the South African market.

Porsche have graced us with 10 models of the GT3 which started with the 996 and has now stretched to the 991. With each new model, this iconic Porsche has become faster and sharper. This is no different then with the latest addition to the range, the 991.2 GT3.

Next-gen GT3

The 991.2 may not look all that different from its predecessor, you may notice wider cooling intakes on the front bumper, or the fact that the rear wing is 20mm higher and sits slightly further back, but this isn't totally obvious at first sight.

These changes are not superficial either and the same goes for newly designed air channels which feature on the underbelly of the car. All of these little design tweaks give the Porsche a lot more downforce over its predecessor, 20% to be exact. This equates to around 155kg at top speed. Because Porsche are clever, there is also no extra drag coefficient which would normally come along with extra downforce, which means straight line speed is not affected.

The small, visible differences to the GT3 make a big difference in terms of performance. There are bigger changes and improvements to the new 991.2 and these cannot be seen at all because it involves the suspension, transmission and engine. Stuttgart have also listened to the Porsche faithful and answered their prayers by offering a manual transmission on the 991.2 GT3.

No word on SA availability or pricing yet but we can expect very few GT3’s for quite a few Rands.
