Purist-focused Porsche 911 GT3 Touring Pack images leak

Touring Pack, due to be officially unveiled at Frankfurt motor show, offers a softer drive for more frequent users than those of the GT3

The Porsche 911 GT3 Touring Pack has leaked ahead of its official unveiling at the Frankfurt motor show.

Originally leaked to Autopresse but now hosted at the PorscheGT NL enthusiast page, the pictures show a similar look to the 911 GT3, with the same front spoiler with deep air intakes, rear bumper with vents and twin central exhausts, although no GT3 rear spoiler.

The engine cover instead appears to have the same spoiler as the standard 911, which raises automatically rather than being fixed in place like that of the GT3.

Confirming previous reports of a purist’s 911, the Touring Pack is also reportedly only available with a manual gearbox - a first for GT3-based models since the limited run 911 R of last year. It’s not yet known if the Touring Pack will be limited-run like the 911, but the name suggests not.

Inside, an all-black interior is pictured, with leather and cloth seats.

The GT3’s full 493bhp is maintained, and the brand’s Sports Chrono package is also available, in addition to other GT3 options including ceramic brakes.

Top speed of the Touring Pack is down from the full-fat GT3, but only by 2mph - the Touring Pack’s 196mph versus the GT3’s 198mph.

Porsche unveils 911 GT3 Touring Package as 'purist's' 911

After the success of the 911 R, Porsche has revealed another enthusiast-focused, manual-transmission 911 GT3 derivative

Porsche has unveiled an alternative to the rare and high-priced limited-volume 911 R in the form of a new 911 GT3 model featuring a so-called Touring Package.

The new 911 GT3 with the Touring Package, which made its world debut at a media function on the eve of the 2017 Frankfurt motor show, is the latest in a line of road-focused models aimed at purists intent on securing one of the last remaining 911 models featuring a naturally aspirated engine.

But, unlike the similarly conceived 911 R, which was limited to 991 units and has commanded exorbitant prices on the used car market since its introduction in 2016, the 911 GT3 Touring Package will be produced as a regular model on an open-ended basis without a cap in volume.

The 911 GT3 Touring Package harks back to a variant of the 911 Carrera RS offered in 1973. Like the earlier 911 R, it combines traditional 911 GT3 styling with that of the standard 911. Up front, it features the same bumper assembly and air ducts as Porsche’s standard race-bred model. The rear, however, receives a more understated look, with an automatically deploying spoiler assembly from the standard 911 Carrera, complete with an additional Gurney flap and a unique grille insert bearing a GT3 Touring logo.

The new model also receives the same rear bumper as the standard 911 GT3, with large air ducts to extract hot air from the engine bay.

Other exterior touches include headlight washer system covers, highlights around the side windows and sport exhaust tailpipes all in silver. Buyers can specify a so-called 'Black Exterior Touring Package' to change these elements to black.

In a further departure from the standard 911 GT3, the internal headlight graphics and tail-light lenses are darkened in colour.

Mechanically, the rear-wheel-drive 911 GT3 Touring Package is identical to the recently facelifted standard 911 GT3. Power comes from the most powerful and largest capacity naturally aspirated version of Porsche’s classic flat six-cylinder petrol engine. With a displacement of 4.0 litres, it delivers 493bhp at 8250rpm and 339lb ft of torque at 6000rpm. The rear-mounted unit also has the distinction of being able to rev to 9000rpm.

Drive is channelled to the rear wheels via a standard six-speed manual gearbox and mechanical locking differential. Porsche claims the same 0-62mph time as the standard 911 GT3 at 3.9sec. However, the 911 GT3 Touring Package cannot quite claim the same top speed, with 196mph versus the standard car's 198mph.

Inside, the new model swaps the Alcantara accents of the standard car for genuine leather trim. It is used on the steering wheel, gear lever, door panel armrests, centre console storage compartment lid and door handles. The seat centres are upholstered in black fabric, while the headrests feature an embossed Porsche logo. There’s also black aluminium trim applications within the dashboard.

The 911 GT3 Touring Package rolls on 20in centre lock wheels - 9.0in in width up front and 12.0in in width at the rear. They are shod with 245/35 and 305/30 profile tyres respectively. Clothed in the same aluminium body as the 911 Carrera 4, the new model is 44mm wider than the standard 911 Carrera. A lowered suspension also sees it sit 25mm closer to the ground.

Among the new model’s innovations is a standard rear-wheel steer function. It steers the rear wheels in the opposite direction as the front wheels for added agility at lower speeds and in the same direction as the front wheels for greater longitudinal stability at higher speeds.

Porsche 911 GT3 Touring Package

New addition to the Porsche puristic vehicles: The Porsche 911 GT3 with Touring Package will be unveiled at the 67th International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. It is available exclusively with a manual six-gear transmission, and instead of the fixed rear wing it has a variable rear spoiler like the 911 Carrera. Beneath its understated exterior is pure motorsport technology: The four-litre naturally aspirated engine taken from motorsport reaches 368 kW (500 hp) and generates a torque of 460 Nm. In combination with optimum gear changes, the Porsche 911 GT3 with Touring Package sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds to reach a top speed of 316 km/h.

The name "Touring Package" harks back to an equipment variant of the 911 Carrera RS from model year 1973. Even then, the puristic 911 design and classic interior features were a key element. The new 911 GT3 with Touring Package adopts and modernises this concept. This variant is aimed at fans of high-quality sports cars who particularly value an understated appearance and classic driving enjoyment.

Aside from the Clubsport Package and Alcantara equipment ranges, virtually all 911 GT3 options are also available from Porsche in combination with the Touring Package. They include features such as all exterior and wheel colours, the PCCB ceramic brake, the lift system, LED headlights, all seat variants, the Chrono Package and the audio systems.

The Touring Package option is available to order now. In Germany, the Porsche 911 GT3 with Touring package costs - like the 911 GT3 - EUR 152,416 including VAT and with country-specific equipment options.

A high-performance sports car in every respect

With the exception of the rear, the body of the GT3 remains unchanged in the variant with Touring Package. This means it has large air intakes in the specially designed front end, as well as the air outlet that is typical of the 911 GT3 model, located in front of the luggage compartment lid. The front and rear lights are identical, though not dark-tinted. The appearance from the side of the vehicle is dominated by the forged alloy wheels with central locking. At the front, 245/35 ZR 20 tyres are fitted on nine-inch wheels, while at the rear 305/30 ZR 20 tyres are mounted on twelve-inch wheel rims. The tyres create a powerful impression as the body of the new variant is 44 millimetres wider at the wheel arches than the 911 Carrera. Lowering by an additional 25 millimetres further emphasises the width of the car.

Sporty aerodynamics: Rear spoiler with additional tear-off edge

The subtle structural features are first visible at the rear end. The spoiler wing of the extending rear spoiler from the series-production 911 is equipped with an aerodynamic tear-off edge (Gurney flap) in the vehicle body colour. The specially designed rear lid grille bears the "GT3 touring" logo. Other distinguishing features include the silver-coloured side window strips, sports exhaust system tailpipes and headlight washer system covers, as well as the Porsche logo at the rear. In the "Black Exterior Touring Package" equipment option, these elements are in black, as with the 911 GT3. The front and rear lights are dark-tinted.

Leather interior

The interior creates the feel of a classic sports car with manual transmission. In line with the character of a puristic GT, fine leather is prevalent rather than Alcantara. The steering wheel rim with twelve o'clock marker, shift lever, door panel armrests, centre console storage compartment lid and interior door handles are upholstered in smooth-finish leather. The seat centres are made of black fabric. The headrests feature embossed Porsche crests and all seams in the partial leather interior are sewn in black thread. The finishing touch to the interior is the trim in black aluminium.

Powerful six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine from motorsport

The powertrain and chassis are identical on all 911 GT3 vehicles with manual transmission, including the variant with Touring Package. The naturally aspirated six-cylinder flat engine with four-litre displacement is taken from racing cars such as the 911 RSR and 911 GT3 Cup. The machine is the most powerful naturally aspirated direct-injection engine and has the greatest displacement that Porsche has ever developed for a six-cylinder flat engine on the road. The engine is characterised by its high-speed concept. The crankshaft spins at up to 9,000 revolutions per minute, which is truly extraordinary, even for a sports car engine.

The gear ratio of the six gears is precisely tuned to the power development of the engine and offers particularly sporty shifting characteristics. An automatic intermediate acceleration function ensures an exciting sound when downshifting. This function is activated via the "Sport" button on the centre console, delivering dynamic shift processes from faster synchronisation of the gears. The GT sports manual transmission transfers the power to a mechanical rear differential lock with automatic braking (PTV).

Fast on the corners, stable on the straights: Rigid chassis with rear-axle steering

The chassis of the Porsche 911 GT3 is testament to Porsche's experience in motorsport. In addition to the basic design, which is optimised for precision, the chassis also boasts superior handling characteristics, thanks predominantly to the active rear-axle steering. Depending on the speed, it steers either in the opposite or the same direction as the front wheels, thereby improving the vehicle's agility and stability. The size of the tyres on both axles is such that the front wheels optimally transmit steering and brake forces, while the rear wheels provide drive and traction.

Porsche Track Precision app as standard

In addition to Porsche Communication Management (PCM) including an online navigation module with real-time traffic information, the standard equipment of every 911 GT3 also includes the Connect Plus module and the Porsche Track Precision app. This app enables the driver to display, record and analyse detailed driving data on their smartphone.

NEW PORSCHE 911 GT3 TOURING PACKAGE DITCHES WING

Porsche has unveiled the 911 GT3 with Touring Package, which ditches the fixed rear wing of the “standard” GT3 in favour of a variable rear spoiler like that used by the 911 Carrera.

Interestingly, this new model – unveiled in Frankfurt – will be available exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission. And pricing? Well, the new 911 GT3 with Touring Package comes in at R2 750 500 in South Africa – exactly the same as the standard 911 GT3 in manual, then.

Porsche says this new variant is aimed at “enthusiasts of high-quality sports cars who value an understated appearance and pure driving dynamics”.

It’s powered by the same 4,0-litre naturally aspirated engine as the 911 GT3, sending 368 kW and 460 N.m to the rear wheels. Porsche says the 911 GT3 with Touring Package sprints from standstill to 100 km/h in an unchanged 3,9 seconds, before topping out at 316 km/h (down ever-so-slightly from the 320 km/h top speed of the standard GT3).

With the exception of the rear, the body of the GT3 remains unchanged. Although front and rear lights are identical, they are not dark-tinted as is the case in the 911 GT3 (but they can be specified that way as an option).

The wing of the extending rear spoiler from the 911 features a Gurney flap in body colour, while the rear lid bears “GT3 touring” lettering. Other distinguishing features include silver trim detailing on the side windows, sports exhaust tailpipes and headlamp washer covers, along with the Porsche logo at the rear.
