I think they know they qualified for the semi and will finish in the top two. Players are selected on stats and those two don't want to throw their wickets away
If you look at the final score then you have to ask how the hell do you lose by 31 runs batting second with 5 wickets in hand.

Weird conclusion to arrive at. Dhoni could bone the selectors' daughters and still get into the team.

At the 1999 World Cup South Africa lost 2 games out of 9. This World cup it looks like we will win 2 games out of 9. Yet our batting stats look better than 1999 although we weren't even competitive in most matches.
Amla has a good average of above 40. Does it mean he was one of our best batsmen at this world cup?
Faf scored more runs in this world cup than Klusener scored in 1999 does it mean Faf carried the 2019 team?
Stats don't always tell you what is going on.

He turns 38 in 7 days. Once you are that age believe me it doesn't matter who you are. People start analyzing the point where you go downhill. Look at Amla who is 2 years younger than Dhoni but journalists are writing that his eye sight is failing because his strike rate decreased. Almost everyone is saying Amla should go because of his age yet Amla is a legend in his own right. Faf even said Amla has earned the right to choose when he wants to leave.

Perhaps India intentionally lost.
If Pakistan beat Bangladesh and England lose against NZ it would mean if India was at the top of the table they would face Pakistan in the semis. Losing today means they would most likely not finish 1st in the table and instead face NZ instead of Pakistan in the semis.

Two batsmen are at the crease at a time. You can't say India didn't go for it because one is a God. Both play a role.
India ended this match with 5 wickets in hand but never attempted to reach the total after Pandya got out when those two got together.
I just made a comment on this as I watched the match as a neutral and I expected a final over cliffhanger which I didn't get. Dhoni's God like status in India is the last thing I want to discuss in this scenario.

True but I remember constantly a top order collapse and Klusener needing to come and save the day that was the next the norm for that generation of players. Apart from Klusener and a couple others the rest of the squad used to literally get bullied whenever they used to go to Australia and they couldn't handle it . They weren't mentally strong at all.

Starting to look like NZ going to choke out at the group stage.
This is what I suspect.. but SA and a few others that try this sort of tactic have had bad results as a result.
If it was because Dhoni wanted to save his bat for a later match it would make some sense.. but still not really. I see he is getting heavily criticized by players of old and fans

Playing for stats. 330 is considered high and unlikely to be cased successfully. It wasn't a must win game.
