FACT CHECK TIME. Here's what our fact checkers found:

  • America didn't adopt the practice of circumcision until the sex-phobic days of the 19th century, when puritanical doctors promoted it as a way to stop kids from masturbating. Psychology Today (Sept. 2011)
  • Cleanliness is no longer an issue thanks to modern hygienic standards. Psychology Today (Sept. 2011)
  • Circumcision has been found to marginally reduce the risk of HIV transmission, but condoms are still much more effective, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • The foreskin is a natural lubricant, contains millions of nerve endings, and prevents desensitization. Psychology Today (Sept. 2011)
  • There's no benefit to it. The Mayo Clinic lists some possible advantages but still says only that circumcision "might" be beneficial.

Thank (insert diety name here) that my penis has not been mutilated at birth.

I know guys who chose to be circumcised later on in life and they reported that after the snip sex was less enjoyable. Something to do with the tip being less sensitive. I never plan on having my boy circumcised and if he wants to later on in life I will use the argument above to dissaude him.

Having your dad argue with you and him telling you that you will enjoy sex more if you're uncut. Not weird at all. :wtf::p

Completely agree.

The way I see it, it is a personal choice. If I have a son and he wants to have it done, I will let him, provided he is 13 or older. I will pay for the op and support him. But I do not see why I need to make that choice for him. Sure, it might be marginally more painful to have done later in life. But to me, that is worth the choice - once it is done, it can never be undone.

That's their choice, they are adults. Just like you can decide to have cosmetic surgery or otherwise intentionally damage your body if you're an adult. Forcibly doing it to babies though, that's something else.

The only reason that could justify it from birth could be the HIV prevention. The HIV reduction at 60% could possibly be worth it, although just condomise and bump that 60% to 99.99% for BOTH parties

This, unless for religious reasons - and there I cannot comment.

I hate that the SA government promotes it like it does, saying it reduces the risk etc etc. That may be technically true, but people will take that and exaggerate it to the point where they believe its a 'get out of jail free' card for HIV prevention.

I am circumcised and my son was at birth.
I can honestly say I didn't know any better until a couple years ago.
Now seeing all these radio ads and the drive by NUMSA and the ANC to become circumcised as a way to prevent or minimize AIDS, it is very sad.

I just think it's a total lack of education on the subject based on years of indoctrination.

Edit: The ads and posters were hinting towards it actually preventing AIDS, not reducing the risk.

Uncut and happy about it.

It should be illegal to circumcise your child without their consent.

Cut and happy about it.

Children can't give consent, that's why you give consent on their behalf.
