In 1960s South Africa (except for bantustans) was very very close to a first world country: hospitals, roads, clean streets... A relative of mine from France even told me South Africa was more advanced than France in 1980's in many areas.

Soweto relative or he visited soweto? We have heard real life stories from soweto friends but it would be awesome to have a soweto relative testimony. Let the stories begin.

Not only is the term “first world” being used very loosely but also “South Africa (except for…)” is a disqualifier.

Oh come on! Look, let’s not put lipstick on a pig. Apartheid was vile and rotten, an inhumane mess created by complete racist idiots.
The unfortunate part was that the country was given to people who were trained as fighters for freedom, and not people who are leaders in government. Had the ANC just not stolen and corrupted everything, we could be very well on our way to being a global powerhouse. It’s a tragic story of socialism veiled as a democracy. Keep the poor hungry, control them, keep them uneducated so they stay in line. It’s all about serving themselves. That’s the sad part.
