The anti-fraud measures MTN uses to stop rogue WASPs from stealing your airtime

Vodacom is currently facing a spate of subscriber complaints regarding airtime disappearing from accounts due to rogue Wireless Application Service Provider (WASP) subscriptions.

MTN faced similar challenges with airtime theft and fraudulent subscriptions last year, though never with its own WASP, and rolled out several measures to stamp out such fraud.

I recently received a sms saying a wasp is trying some sht on my mtn account and do i want to allow it by replying yes. So mtn is at least trying from what ive seen

Just a question. Do you use your phone to browse the interwebs? Trying to see how they pickup your number etc..

If they do double opt-in on one service does nit mean they do it on all the services... thousands if people still get subscribed on all 3 main operators.

The operators actually pass your number to some companies when you visit their services. Scary, right - by browsing a service your mobile is sometimes shared - without you knowing.

that is exactly why i am asking. They should stop doing that... ( i know.. wishfull thinking)

0% value to consumer
100% value to ISP's
conclusion, these WASP's can be scrapped all together.

"Never with its own WASP" - rubbish!

I experienced the WASP challenge from Vodacom, I am a contract customer and noticed that my airtime was disappearing from two of my numbers, R5 every second day. When I contacted Vodacom they told me that I have subscribed to Worldplay and Intarget Mobile advertising. I asked them to stop it because I didn't subscribed to any services but they said they can not or unable to stop them from their side. They gave me some numbers which are not working and websites of which you can't unsubscribe because that option is not available. I called them every time my airtime disappeared and finally they refunded me and surprisingly subscription stopped. Recently I would receive SMS that I wanted to subscribe to some thing but content is blocked, I can dial *117# to unblock it. I think they decided to stop it because they noticed that I am not going to give up, they were just greedy that's why I noticed something was wrong with my airtime. It's true they are benefiting from these scams, how can a network provider say they can't stop subscription, who to turn to now?

Are you using a Vodafone / Vodacom branded handset?

No I was using Stylo. Got contract for Nokia phones of which I used them for 8ta. I wasn't even using Stylo for internet, then one of the consultant blamed the phone I was using for subscription.
