The argument behind South Africa's five-year driver's licence validity period decision

Why not have the card as proof and then you can digitally renew your licence every year, two years or what ever on an app where you can pay for the renewal online as well. If you get stopped. They scan your card to determine if the licence is valid. Easy.
Oh but wait. it's got nothing to do with safety and all that and everything to do with how the cadres can get the tenders.

"Outa noted the statement made by RTMC CEO Makhosini Msibi that many accidents on South African roads relate to infectious and other diseases, making regular eye tests crucial."

I can't see the problem.
OK I'll have an eye test done at my optometrist and my optometrist can upload the results directly to them. No need for renewal, just an up to date eye test. I'm fine with that.

Though... I already have a requirement to wear glasses as part of my license. So I suppose technically I don't need to go for an eye test because I know I'll fail it anyway... so no update necessary for me, just those who don't yet need glasses.

It's not an excuse. There's no reason beyond "we want money" for it ever to expire and force me to go back to the traffic department.

Even the evil apartheid government wasn't greedy as your drivers license never expired and was in your ID book.

Logic and common sense has always been back in South Africa. This just proves the government is truly retards.

It makes no sense.
So there's no scientific evidence to support this claim? Just asking.

If your head is up your a$$ like most ministers, then I suppose a communicable disease could be a valid reason for poor eyesight and therefore a lower validity period for drivers licenses!
Baffle us with bullsh*t why don't you Makhosini (maarhusienie niks) Msibi.
This is a downright insult to all motorists!

It makes perfect sense that the license never expired.

I also understand the desire to have periodic eye tests. If your eyes are declared fine to drive today it doesn't mean they're fine in X years time. However the process can be automated and optometrists just upload the results. Heck I'm even prepared to pay a fee to the licensing department to process that eye test. Without that valid eye test your license is invalid until the eye test is uploaded. If you were declared needing to have glasses no need for new eye test, your eyes are buggered anyway.

Just having to go stand in a queue every 5 years for no good reason is utterly insane.

Plus, there is no actual legalities against driving with the expired card. Only rental agencies seem to care
