Yes and so did the other teams you mentioned ;)

IIRC we were the first team to win there since the Windies....

Yep, that was a great win for us. :)
Pity we messed up in the 1st test back here. :(

Yeah... All I am saying is we were the only team to really give aus a go in the last 10-15 years... But we were still bullied by them a lot:p

Think atm its between us and India who will de-throne the Aussies in the ODIs and who will take the pro20 WC home.

Nope, India have been beating them in India most of the time.
They've come pretty close to beating them in Aus as well.

Sri Lanka beat them in Sri Lanka.

England won the 2005 Ashes, let us not forget that.;)
They got pwned 5-0 next time around.

West Indies also beat them a few times in that time.
(Brian Lara did)

Pretty much between India and SA, the T20.
But who knows...

India and SA look set to dominate world cricket in my opinion regardless of what form.

Pro 20 i dunno hey, if gayle gets going they beat anyone and let's not right the sri lankens off just yet because they pose a big threat.

We have more than that actually but anyhoo, we have atleast 6-8 gayle's if you ask me.

Not the exact same style but as capable, that is why i feel we are so strong at the moment, my point was even though the WI are rather poor one good innings from gayle can win a game for them and in a once off game in pro 20 you never know what can happen. It is not quite as predictable as 50 over or tests.

The ipl turned india into a T20 super power, the only team who can beat them at the moment is SA,

The Ashes is only mabe a big fuss of, because it is the first test series, it is nothing more special then SA vs Aus though,

How so?

Or is this another of those SA (like Aus) sports believers comments, that "ours is bigger/better than yours'.

Objectively, the SA-Aus 'rivalry' pales by comparison, and so do all the other test series' in cricket...objectively.

Measure the rate at which tickets are snapped up, the % capacity in grounds, the amount of TV coverage/advertising, the profitability etc etc....oh and the amount of barmy-army backpackers trekking around the world.

Australia for example (as much as SA want it) will always hold onto the Boxing Day slot...because they actually fill a bloody 100,000 seat stadium..and they do so as soon as tickets go on sale, almost like an AC-DC concert...not saying AC-DC's good, but the point is the people interest is bloody higher than the grounds in SA where even with half the tickets given out, the stadium is still empty.

There are stuff that SA does better than Aus, or have an higher interest in. Rugby Union...higher interest, more players etc. Cricket no, Aus have a higher interest in cricket in terms of numbers of kids, grade cricketers etc.
Running..SA wins hands down, Comrades, Two Oceans etc 20,000 runners , fantastic on course spectators etc...Aus virtually non-existent.

Just be objective and stopping pissing in your own pond.....not everything is bigger or better in one's own country.

cheers:)

Don't be so sure, sri lanka is dangerous.

Now it just got a bit boring there for the last 25 years... with england winning twice IIRC in that time. Best / Fiercest rivalries are not so one sided.

Notice how the test matches SA vs Aus was sold out? Also note that all 6 tests had a result...... Now that is fierce rivalry.

Oh and ps us south africans hate the Aussies in the sporting arena right accross the board.

I agree, and I also think that T20 is a lot closer than tests / ODIs. Any team can beat another on their day - as WI showed Aus and NED showed Eng.

I think OzzieCapie probably knows that more than most.

Not the Aussies fault surely...the Poms had their time in the sun.
...and btw, a lot of the other rivalries listed (celtic/rangers etc) even more one sided in the context of the league they are in.

The Aussie home games are always packed and Melburnians in particular are so mad about sport (or perhaps deprived) that they may even get 100,000 to MCG for 'pick up sticks' comp....
...but the SA home games were not sold out, esp the weekdays and even the weekend ones were reliant on freebies....well that's what I heard here;)

I think OzzieCapie probably knows that more than most.

Yep I do...but remember I still back the saffers...my member is still dangling in the Indian Ocean:eek:

Well the poms don't count as they are a bit daft at the best of times. :p
Also "footie" < Cricket and rugby :D

Is a fight between a fox and a lion fierce? No but a fight between a leopard and a lion might be a bit more fierce...

My point is that yes there is a great history surrounding the Ashes but that does not make it the fiercest. The tests between Aus and SA were on a knife's edge the whole time and that is what made it fierce.

test cricket is quite a big thing in Aus and England, some of us find it to boring and slow.

Well then some of us should learn what the game of cricket is all about.... ;)

true, although I do believe the reason why other nations struggle to grow in cricket is because test cricket is considered to be the end all of cricket, T20 is the future I wish the ICC would start to realize it. Lets face it, you play a game for 5 days and then at times you still cant decide who won.

Yes but the thing is, test cricket shows us who the really good batsmen / bowlers are.

I agree that T20 and ODIs should be played in all the countries to get them to start playing cricket. (heard something about a USA T20 tourney)

I love ODIs and T20s but Test cricket is the ultimate to watch when it between two teams like SA and Aus.

it shows endurance, but not necessarily better players, T20 imho is under accredited for the skill required, its not just about tonking and slogging.
Test cricket is nice to watch on a holiday/ sunday afternoon.

Yes because R. vd Merwe is a great bat judging by his T20 performance.... Doubt if he will get a 50 in 50 tries for SA in test cricket.

T20 is very nice, and I like that it is changing the way we look at cricket and some of it is even filtering into test cricket.

But T20 < ODI < Test for me thanks.

The same can be said for Stuard Broad ?> .......his **** regardless.
Vd. Merwe is a good bowler and should play in the 50:50, his batting style is quite obvious, Mr6 or Mr, niks.
