Do they have inspectors coming around to check how many sets you have in your household?

And if so, how would you convince then that this monitor is not a "TV"?

You'd presume that an inspector would know what a TV-tuner is. Usually the big screen-looking thing would have a coax input that you can plug your antenna into. If it only has HDMI or some such, then it's just a monitor.

Personally, I've only ever seen an inspector for the brief period that I lived in the UK, they actually did send one out when I claimed not to have a TV...

This may be unrelated, but I would like to know why TV's that incorporate tuners are still being manufactured? Terrestrial tv is coming to an end at some point. Or is the plan to keep SA as a 3rd world country for the foreseeable future?

Digital (DVB-T/C/S) builtin tuners will eventually take over completely as digital migration across the world is completed and analogue broadcasts are halted.

I bought the equivalent 12 years ago. 37 inch Mecer HD-Ready Monitor, it's still going strong.

If it looks like tv and smells like tv, they going to say its a tv, they wouldnt even know whats a tv tuner. lmao

That is exactly what the inspector would come to check is to verify that there is no TV-tuner.

If you neuter your real TV to remove the tuner that is exactly what their certification is for.

So they know all about it.

South Africans don’t like paying their TV licences.

This is evident in the SABC’s latest financial results, which showed a 27.8% compliance level when it came to TV licence payments.

What I find quite remarkable its that a respected online tech news player will encourage its users to bypass the law to save 72c a day. Smacks of privilege and an ideological preference for all media to be privately owned. There is no byline so I can only assume the 'staff writer' was embarrassed about this story. Sure the SABC was corrupt under previous boards and in particular under Hlaudi, but if mybroadband was paying attention it would have noticed that a new board with a new executive team presented a comprehensive turnaround strategy to parliament on Tuesday, including possible retrenchments. But I guess you wouldnt want the facts to get in the way of a good story

A plan on paper <> action in reality.

Communications minister Nomvula Mokonyane has already publicly stated her opposition to the retrenchment plan and put her own task team together. So step 1A isn't going very well...let us know from your office at Auckland Park when some actual change occurs.

Their products last forever. But not really good quality. I have an ancient 24" and it looks really bad compared to my Dell.

Yeah that thing is not awesome... It's possibly an OK deal for what it is, but I can only imagine the processing unit and suxh is very very subpar.

Cheapest I can find online (R7400.99) - worth a punt as a desktop display / TV? (undecided where I'll use it )
