The best and worst mobile networks in South Africa

MyBroadband Insights has released the 2020 Mobile Network Quality Report, which shows that MTN has the best mobile network in South Africa.

The report is based on 1.2 million speed tests which were performed by 41,000 MyBroadband Speed Test App users across South Africa between 1 January and 31 December 2020.

Vodacom used to be the best, but MTN is better now from personal experience. Faster data transfer and latency in most areas.

You are correct. It took some time, but MTN's investments over the past few years are now paying off big time. Vodacom is, however, starting to invest more than MTN which may change the tables in future.

I think this comparison is a bit unfair though when it comes to Rain.

Rain sells speed capped services. 10 x 5G premium speedtests of 200Mbps+ vs 500 x 4G 10Mbps speedtest will skew the average.

The other networks do not sell capped speed services. Telkom did a one stage but for a limited time and it's not as popular as the R479 10Mbps sim from Rain. If you look at their website they no longer offer payg data so you have to buy the bundles they offer 2 of them which is speed capped.

Why is it if MBB have a pole about what phone network provider you would like to use, with costs out of the picture, Vodacom wins hands down?

Could be many people understood "if price, speed and quality were not a consideration".
