The big 5G problem in South Africa

Africa is a large continent, and investors tend to pick and choose their markets based on a multitude of criteria.

Some see opportunities in emerging arenas while others focus on more developed and mature opportunities.

I don't see the "Problem". Companies will always focus on where the money is. That is how business works. You won't go invest in something if you won't get any of your money back.

Rolling out expensive internet services to areas that aren't the most likely to spend good money on them makes no sense.

Same with fibre - roll out to wealthier areas and you'll get loads of 100-1000Mbps signups. Which means more money to keep rolling out when you're done with such areas.

Was the original title, not that BS, @Bradley Prior / @Jamie McKane, please stop changing the titles of articles if you copy them, you two seem to constantly fail at actually reading the text you're copying and selecting appropriate titles, instead you're just making more clickbait. @rpm this is shoddy work, and you're letting them but MyBB name on it, guess that's why MyBB is getting a worse and worse reputation.

Article misses the point. 5G was never going to be deployed across the whole country. Most operators the world over will be using it as supplemental to 3G and 4G even in urban areas to offload demand. With a radius of only a few hundred meters you can't possibly cover everyone.

That's half the 5G spec, please read the other half (FR1 is deployed at <6Hz with e.g. Korea deploying at 3.5GHz). Then you're also missing beam forming.
It won't be "supplemental", it will be part of the product stack and will probably be the main tech in denser areas due to, as mentioned, beam forming, Massive MIMO and general improvements to the multi-connectivity operation spec (Check 10.2 of the spec https://portal.3gpp.org/desktopmodules/Specifications/SpecificationDetails.aspx?specificationId=3198 , a bit dry reading, but interesting)

I know it's only half of it, but it's the part the operators are clamoring for. I don't know what the point of the article is as it was pretty much a given that 5G wasn't really going to be deployed where LTE and 4G already works effectively like in rural areas as the speed increase doesn't justify the cost of replacing equipment.

5G at lower bands would be just as effective as 4G, maybe even a little better.

The question with rural is always cost to upgrade if current infrastructure can handle. And 5G also has the question of hardware support consumer side, would assume in rural a lot more poor people or ones that don't swap equipment often.

5G signal is really week and will require several base stations to function properly, so if you not in a major area or based in an area along a major a highway the chance of you getting 5G is virtually 0.
