1) 2009 Peugeot 207 1.6 Hdi XS
2) Demo 9000km
3) R202500 discounted to R135000. 6 months old when I bought it in August 2009
4) Retail Currently R63000. Trade probably R45000.
5) I paid the car off in 32 months. Positive equity after +/- 15 months.

Car still works great. 1 glow plug is giving an error, but not a crisis in our climate. The interior is now starting to look a bit tired despite being well cared for. 130000km on the odo. The clear coat started to fade on the roof and rear bumper after about 8 years of never being garaged.

1) 2015 Ford Fiesta 1.6 tdci with safety pack
2) Bought Demo
3) R204 000
4) About R140 000 after 48 months
5) Positive equity on purchase after deposit

I'm not sure that the depreciation graph is accurately portraying the data... Imo it should be % based and not on the amount per month. R2000/month depreciation on a R750 000 vehicle is a lot less painful than R1500/month on a R150 000 skedonk.

Percentage means nothing without time though. Somebody whose car loses R10 000 every month and sells after three months is technically doing worse than somebody whose car is depreciating by R15 000/year and sells after three years.

Monthly Depreciation as a percentage of purchase price.

1) 2008 BMW 135i Coupe, manual
2) Used, 4 years old in 2012
3) R300k. New price in 2008 was R43x 000.
4) Dont know, but it's insured for retail value @ R119 000, so probably R100k?
5) Day 1, reasonable deposit.

The depreciation curve is slowly evening out, over the last 32 months it lost an average of R1050 per month in insured value, compared to the R2700pm it lost in purchase price over the first 4 years.

You gotta find out. You can get a TransUnion car report for like R29, then share it here

FNB values it at R173k without the extras, the isurance values it at R244k, so I'll probably get a trade in offer of around R100k if I decide to trade in. Bath of note.

Ok guys, data is no good without graphs, and we've had an amazing mix of vehicles (thanks for that - I'm going to keep updating this as we go!).

This is pretty fascinating for me :)

I've discarded two outliers (people who bought impossibly good secondhand deals), and to try get an 'apples-to-apples' figure I've used a simple formula: (Retail Price - Trade-In Price)/(Time in Months) = Average depreciation per month

NB: New cars depreciate faster than older cars, and a lot of the cars here are secondhand cars (so their depreciation curve was softened by the original owners taking that first knock). To get the 'full' picture, refer back to the original post (number included alongside each car) in the raw data below.

Moral of the story: buy a budget car and you'll suffer less depreciation, or just drive it for long enough to beat the depreciation curve. That Volkswagen Golf R though, ouch!

No Ragrets

1) 2015 Volkswagen Golf R
2) New
3) R620k
4) Trade - R387k/Retail - R441k 38 months after purchase.
5) I am guessing it was late last year but I haven't kept a record of current trade/retail values.

New to trade value is almost the original price I paid for my car. Although to be honest I don't see a dealer selling a golf r for R440k, would expect them to sell for a bit more.

This is where there will be differences of opinion and a lot of debate, is the car worth the trade or retail value, both are achievable depending on how you decide to sell it? You simply won't find a 2015 Golf R for sale anywhere near the trade value unless the mileage is really high but that isn't a fair comparison, most 2015 Golf R's at similar mileage to mine are priced at over R450k.

Thanks for all the new data from your cars, guys! I'll update my graph tonight and create a second one with the percentage idea over time (sounds good!).

I think I win, I bought an Opel Kadett 1400 in 1985 for R2700 (2nd hand), and sold it in 1988 for R5500. That's more than 100% profit and 3 years usage
