The communication minister’s vital mistake

Utter nonsense, it all stemmed from the delay of the dvb standard which was Siphiwe Nyanda and co's doing. It was all over the web and cost Siphiwe Nyanda his position.

In the ANC government you need to perform below average to retain your position. Above average gets you posted elsewhere....

Sigh, once again Communications gets what left in the bottom of the barrel after everybody else who's decent has been scooped up. This will set all IT projects back several years and IT is such a valuable sector when it comes to job creation and economy growth.

It's time that the whole communication portfolio is removed from the government's control and left to the private sector to sort out. In such a highly technical field, I find it hard to believe that Roy or any other ANC politician has the necessary intelligence or intellect to fully understand and appreciate what it is that they are doing.

And if its far enough below average then you get a couple months paid sick-leave/holiday and a multi-million Rand golden handshake.

Don't stress, if history does repeat itself like it normally does, Roy will be back next year! :p

Hmmmm... So the two big cell operators welcome the new appointment... Makes me suspicious. Now there's more excuses for delay.

Padayachie’s replacement will have her work cut out for her, and she will need to deal with:

The migration from analogue to digital television;

The Post Office being leaderless after CEO Motshoanetsi Le***a was placed on leave of absence pending the outcome of a probe into the lease of new offices, involving irregular and wasteful expenditure of nearly R450m;

The removal of the Post Office’s chief operating officer John Wentzel, who was also acting MD of Postbank, during a key phase in Postbank’s corporatisation;

A ministerial oversight committee set up by Former minister Padayachie to monitor and speed up the introduction of retail banking in the Post Office;

Local Loop unbundling; and

The allocation of new radio frequency spectrum.

Considering she was fired for wasteful expenditure...

We're screwed.

I think they are being polite - and looking to score points so that they can get their way. Especially since the wireless last mile is being discussed in the LLU discussions.

Roy was doing what ministers are supposed to be doing. Making sure that the populace of this country benefit from the regulations and advancements in industry.

Ah well... I can see my tax rands going to fund more hotel stays and luxury lifestyles.

I was under the impression that his redeployment was actually a promotion, albeit at a very inconvenient time? This does seem like a move to cripple the Department by bodies such as Telkom who are getting uncomfortable with the LLU agenda.

I don't vallue their input all that much... Their response was predictable and politically correct. To say anything else would be daft....

Arthur Goldstuck commented quite favourably on the new appointments on Cape Talk's Midday report, describing Pule, her deputy as well as the DG as people with a no-nonsense approach.

Isn't spectrum allocation, LLU, and DTV migration more a matter for ICASA than the Ministry of Communications?

Considering the work lying ahead of Pule and that she has Nyanda as a role model before she too was canned, it looks like communications in South Africa will remain in the dark ages for the foreseeable future.

And I bet Telkom will be grinning broadly about this.

:(

In fairness to her she was apparently not in Nyanda's camp and got moved away from him.
Apparently she clashed with Nyanda and that earns her some points on its own

She has received compliments from people that have no interest in being nice about her

Having said that Padayachee looked to be doing well.
Therefore for continuity sake this move is not bright

2 words that give me hope - 'you're fired'

If it was indeed the digital migration debacle that got him fired, I wish that the same intolerance of poor performance would be extended to other portfolios. There may be hope for SA yet!
