Minister Winde said the report also found that the agriculture sector remains one of the most significant employers in the country, creating 50,000 jobs in the national agriculture sector since 2011.

The report warned that growth was being threatened by red tape and a low success rate for land reform projects across the country.

But yet .... we persist

Well, the results from StatsSA for the same period are not that much different: Overall food and non-alcoholic beverage inflation in rural areas was 15.4% y/y. If you take only the very basics (which appears to be what this study used), the inflation numbers for the year up to April 2016 per StatsSA was:

Bread and cereals: 21.8%
Vegetables: 27.6%
Oils & fats: 26.4%

Once you start including the "non basic" categories the numbers are lower (still considering only rural areas):

Fruit: 19.6%
Dairy: 4.2%
Fish: 9.1%
Meat: 7.3%

The problem is the overall average CPI figure sitting at a laughably low level when almost everything is exceeding it, yet that CPI figure is of course the one many companies use as a benchmark when salary increases roll round etc
