I keep reading about how cruel or traumatic it must be for infants so if I might ask the guys who were shorn at a young age what they recall of the procedure because despite all of the pain and suffering I must have endured I simply dont remember it.

I'll better that.

I had a T-bone with my Motorbike into a 1400 Nissan Bakkie in 1999. I broke both my upper legs and was in a coma for 2 days and in traction for 3 weeks.

I can't recall the pain however it still haunts me.

Time heals all wounds. So I would assume that the above question has no relevance. ;)

You say you're haunted by the pain - are you haunted by your circumcision?

I'm sure that most people who had it done under the age of 3 don't remember it. That doesn't make it right though. Is it OK to hurt your young kids because they won't remember it? Would it be OK to circumcise an infant daughter because she won't remember it?

Although I don't think it is the equivalent of the extent to which girls are mutilated I do think there is something wrong when this surgery is carried out for anything, but medically sound reasons. There is a problem when laws mention only protection of girls. It should be illegal to do it for religious or cultural reasons.

I come from a society where it is routine to circumcise new born boys. I feel neither outraged that it was done nor traumatised in any way.

Have you been circumcised or is your disapproval not based on personal experience?

Some people are upset it was done, but I think the extent and the occurrence of complications or sexual problems is being exaggerated.

If you're saying it's good to have the little guy capped for what ever reason, your going agains the fact that you've been created in mirror image of GOD.
That being said. You then say that GOD's creation has a flaw ?

You are assuming that I care about god or religion, or am in any way religious, as to MHO about Gods creations being flawed, .....well lets just say there are many flaws.

Personally i still, and will always advocate circumcision, and contrary to the large anti league out there, I like many others still see it as healthier, cleaner and more advantagous.

I have to agree with the sentiment that we'd be up in arms if we were talking about cutting off part of a girl's genitals because it would be easier to keep clean. I suspect that even cutting away part of the clitoral hood would be frowned upon.

It's none of those, but I have no problem with advocating it for consenting adults who don't mind losing the most sensitive part of their anatomy. I do have an issue with forcing it on unconsenting children.

The US, I assume? That's the only Western country where it's still done in significant numbers (though when you were born, Australia, Canada, and SA still had reasonably high rates). US current rate are down to about 54%, I believe, and dropping, especially as more and more states drop it from state-funded health schemes.

I got into a debate on the topic a few years ago, and was quite horrified at reading about the subject.

So if you were in a society that circumcised females that would be okay?

I just think it should be everyones right to choice what ever it is that needs to be done.

I will not make that choice for my little boy he can do it himself.

He needs to life by his own choices, good or bad and life with the pro's/cons.
I can be there for advise and support but that is it.

If he wants to Play rugby so be it, if he wants to do Dance so be it. What ever. That is his choice and not mine. I have a life and need to life it and so should he.

You dont see a difference between the practice of female genital mutilation and male circumcision?

I have no complaint about being circumcised, nor have I heard any complaints from my friends who have been circumcised, and come to think of it I don't recall any complaints from forumites either who underwent the procedure.

However I haven't come across any women who have undergone female circumcision who dont feel that they were mutilated.

I dont know how to respond to this. Its a little scary that you find mutilation acceptable... but I suppose its a culture thing.

You really should watch Penn&Teller`s episode on the subject.

I also have no problems with breast augmentation, tattoos, piercings and what have you even though those could be considered as mutilation. What is unacceptable is FGM - which is clearly a far cry from male circumcision.

I dont feel like I have been mutilated - I really cannot put it any simpler than that for you.

Sure, just remember that when you add all those tattoos and piercings to your 1 month old child. I know you may not have felt that you lost anything, if you dont have it you dont miss it :D I mean... who cares if you loose 20 000 nerve endings... its not like they had a purpose.

This whole line of argument is pointless - unless you undergo circumcision or I have a reversal neither of us can possibly argue from a position of understanding.

100% correct !

How can I know what it is if I haven't had it ?

The point is though, The fact that something so big I feel can not be made on behalf of someone. That should be their choice. It's is theirs after all !
