This is an issue that constantly irks me. How is having the foreskin removed any worse that having a vasectomy, or having your tonsils removed? There are proven medical benifits and apart from slightly rediced sensitivity, it has little effect on your sex-life at all.
A Vastectomy is generally not undertaken on infants.
Tonselectomies are performed when these organs become infected and adversley affect the health of the child.
Circumcision is supposedly a prophylactic procedure performed in the absence of a medical need / diagnosis.
The supposed health benefits - do you really know what the odds are here.
- 1:136 Odds on getting a UTI
- 1:50,000 Chance of preventing penile cancer
- 1:5,000 Chance of Phimosis
- 1:36,000 Chance of Frenulum Breve
Quite frankly, I rather take my chances at the race track.
I also find it bizarre that 90% of the people against circumcision are uncircumcised - what's it to you? I'm circumcised (I'm Jewish) and I think it's a totally personal thing and the idea of making it illegal and calling it 'mutilation' is actually quite offensive.
Right, So I am circumcised and I am not Jewish or Muslim.
Mutilation (a definition):
- is an act or physical injury that degrades the appearance or function of the (human) body, usually without causing death. (Wikipedia)
- to inflict serious injury on the body or a part of the body of a person or animal by removing or destroying parts of it (Encarta)
- To damage or main by depriving of a limb or part (Collins)
- To disfigure by damaging irreparably (The free Dictionary)
- To render imperfect. or To harm as to impair use. (Wikitictionary)
- To make imperfect by excising or altering parts. (Answers.com)
Circumcision irreparably and permanently removes and destroys a part of the penis (the foreskin and all its structures), rendering that organ imperfect and disfigured and impairs its normal functioning and appearance.
And yes, being circumcised is a totally personal thing. Something I would not have chosen for myself had I been given the opportunity. I was though not given the benefit of choice - this 'personal choice' was thrust on me by others.
