As some people here know I wrote my pristine Corsa Gamma off and was paid out by insurance. I have added another R20K so I have exactly R60K to get another car. So currently trying to find something decent.
So scouring classifieds daily and having to go look at a few cars I can honestly say that peoples perceptions differ vastly.
Good Condition: Interior looks like gremlins had a rave party inside the car the night before. I really don't know how car seats land up frayed to hell, interior trim broken and missing like speaker grills and air vents etc.
Excellent condition: broken or missing something or other. Obvious body panel repair but since it was fixed (often poorly) it has become excellent.
Body needs some TLC: Every panel on the car is scratched or dented. Fog lights are missing or broken. At least 1 tail light is cracked.
Just needs a good service: A good service is not going to change a clattering valve train or miraculously cure a misfire unless the spark plugs are so worn out they are causing the miss.
Other oddities include things like "new fuel filter" like wow that is amazing
Licence up to date. Yes well that is to be expected isn't it?
Lady driver......so that makes the car special?
Start and go. This one gets me every time. People usually want a car for that very reason.
One of a kind.....uhm ok???
Must be seen to be believed. So it might be imaginary?
For sale car. This was in the description of a Audi A3.
Then there are things like missing spare wheels, jack and wheel spanner and on the 2 occasions I did ask where the spare was the seller didn't know.
Licences that are years behind. Are people really that lazy that they can't keep this up to date?
Saturday I looked at a VW Polo at a used car lot. Guy told me the car was pristine. When I get there the car had to be jump started. Sales guy said he would replace battery if I took it. No gear knob. Missing sun visor, electric windows didn't work and I mean non of them. When I took it for a drive it lacked power and was jerking. Sales guy said it just needed a cam belt service.
Brakes were almost not there like the brake booster wasn't getting any vacuum. Indicators didn't work. But hey the aircon worked so it was pristine.
When you on a fixed budget trying to find something decent can be a nightmare and entertaining at the same time.
