The curved TV is dead

South African consumers may find it almost impossible to buy a premium curved TV from any retailer in the country in 2020.

Curved TVs are a great example of marketing hype, and how it was all about the hype at the end. From an early adopters point of view it was cool and as the product matured it became stale and opinion swung the other way around. Just go have a look at the tech channels on YouTube, all the praise a few years ago... /cough, paid for influence, but I think many liked it as it was something new.

Today, curved computer monitors are the cherry and the only cherry. Even these had its doubts, but then came Samsung and curved was making monitors great again. Most gamers I know prefer curved monitors. Curve in my opinion doesn't make sense on 24" and smaller, but does become very usable on 27" - 34" and on the various sizes of wide screens.

Curve has its use cases and it does make sense in captive gaming, but that is it for me.

I am also sure curved TVs will return in time...

We bought a 65 inch Series 8000 Samsung curved TV 5 years ago, because it was on special and cheaper than the similar model flat TV. We sit 3 to 4 metres from the TV when watching it. It is a nice TV with a great picture.

I really can't see any difference with the curve compared to a flat TV. When we need to buy again, I will definitely buy the TV based on panel quality and price. Flat or curved will not be a critical criteria, because it simply does not make a difference.

Never really made sense anyways. If you had a decent panel with good viewing angles you don't need something to be curved. What a waste of money.

I only read the article now,

This provides a far greater field of view for a more immersive gaming experience, which can also offer an advantage in competitive gaming.

yeah, no. A curved monitor won't give you a competitive advantage. A brighter monitor, peak brightness, yeah, sure. The rest comes down to response times, and the accuracy thereof. It is like saying that 3D surround sound will give you a competitive edge, because immersion, no. I wonder if most people know what 'gaming' sound actually is, for layman it is to sacrifice as much as possible for the maximisation of accuracy.
