Another incisive article from Aunty Helen.

These paragraphs are definitely worth thinking about -- the largely clueless electoral analysts who have never run a coalition vs. somebody who has had vast experience of running a coalition.
The best way to rid yourself of all the challenges of a coalition government is to grow your own party and win outright, instead of depending on other parties, just a thought.

Maybe she must reconsider her stance of keeping the DA a 20% party.

The DA's value proposition seems to be, the other guys are a lot worse so pick us. Low energy approaches as Trump might say.

The only way to prevent this, as other countries with proportional representation systems have learnt, is to introduce a reasonable minimum threshold that must be reached in order to win a seat in a Council or Parliament.

I have an even better solution, winner takes all, no opposition parties, no coalition governments.

Bedrock of non-racial democrats - has she visited DA supporters here?

The best case scenario would be a strong DA (with over 20% of the votes) as the bedrock of a coalition of non-racial democrats building a new majority to govern South Africa.

The political landscape of Helen running a coalition as compared to what it is today is totally different and requires totally different thinking.

I've often said that Helen was a good politician for a specific time but her politics is now outdated and has become a hindrance to the DA. It was similar to Mandela. His politics was good for that time but is now outdated and would not work today.

Well, it is the first time I've posted in this thread for a long time lol (thought it was dead until I saw it in latest posts).

The problem is what should the threshold be? 2%, 5%?

I get what Aunty Helen is trying to say, but it does seem to play into "don't vote other opposition, vote DA".

On another note, I notice that even DA supporters and apologists are also keeping this thread alive so the regular snowflakes who often barge in to this thread to try and silence critics of the DA and get the thread closed or deflect can't accuse critics of the DA for keeping it alive.

In the German parliament which uses a mix of constituency and party lists, it is 5% which seems reasonable to me.

Nope. The problem has actually become worse since Zille's 2006 CoCT coalition. There are many, many more parties now than there was in 2006. Regardless her general point stands than many of these smaller parties have very narrow interests.

Narrow interest being anything that is not the DA's position? The trouble with the DA and its trouble with coalition governments is simple, they don't understand that the very reason there are coalition goverments is that no one was good enough to get a majority.

As soon as they grasp the simple fact that they need the smaller parties to govern they will come alright.

Agree. Voters are happy to wade in sewage as long as they get that grant or kickback from a tender. Personal accountability and pride is a thing of the past. ZA101

Say what you will about the DA but if you have been to Gauteng recently you will really appreciate the Cape. Won't fall into a pothole.
