14 cars Tesla's biggest rival could launch in South Africa — including a 2,000km hybrid and "tank-turning" off-roader

BYD could be bringing a range of fully-electric vehicles (BEVs) and hybrid cars (HEVs) to South Africa in the coming years, including a plug-in hybrid with over 2,000km range on a single charge and tank of petrol.

The Chinese automotive giant — widely regarded as Tesla's biggest rival — has already launched its fully electric Atto 3 compact SUV and Dolphin hatchback in South Africa.

Since they're subject to huge/big/massive US tariffs I guess we're gonna be the guinea pig of the Chinese EV even more than before.

just when we thought knock-off Toyota quantum taxis were bad,

now we get knock off Chinese EV's that look like Teslas, but catch fire twice as fast, if they cant lose axles or have safety features that dont activate.

give it a few years when all the politicians and Government workers get these instead of Range rovers or BMW's

Already popped in the Official BYD Thread.

It’s official: 320 kW BYD Shark coming to SA in 2025!

The new BYD Shark is scheduled to launch in South Africa in 2025 and could potentially beat Ford’s electrified Ranger to market as Mzansi’s first PHEV bakkie…

Yes, it’s official: Cars.co.za can confirm that the new BYD Shark double-cab bakkie is scheduled to launch in South Africa at some point in 2025, arriving with a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain boasting as high an output as 320 kW.

That would, of course, make the BYD Shark the most powerful bakkie on the local market, a title currently held by the 292 kW Ford Ranger Raptor. In addition, this fresh-faced Chinese contender could potentially beat the Blue Oval brand’s upcoming electrified Ranger to market as Mzansi’s first PHEV bakkie.

As a reminder, the 205 kW Ranger PHEV will be built at Ford’s Silverton assembly plant in South Africa, with a launch in initial European markets expected to take place in the opening half of 2025. As yet, Ford SA has technically not confirmed the plug-in Ranger for the local market, though it’s surely only a matter of time.

Meanwhile, BYD South Africa told Cars.co.za that the Shark “will be offered in the local market in the upcoming year”, without specifying exactly when. For the record, the Chinese automaker’s local range currently comprises only fully electric vehicles (the Dolphin, Atto 3and Seal), which means the Shark could arrive as its first PHEV.

BYD is just fine. They've been in the battery business for a long time.

Sorry to burst bubbles but Tesla is hardly quality. Rather get the actual OEM manufacturers to deliver EVs not some social media addict

Based on?

I have one, the quality is right up there with any of the other cars I've owned.
