The Face of Congestion

So I'm not complaining or whining, but I wanted to give those of you who don't experience congestion a view as to what it's like.

Before 18:00, you type into command prompt - ping -t www.google.co.za. You will, if you're fortunate like me, get a set of replies, with a time of around 15 milliseconds. Not too shabby.

Next, try this trick at about 19:30. If your exchange is not congested, the times of your replies should be near those from earlier. If, however, your exchange is congested like mine, you'll get something like this: Capture.PNG .

This means your internet is pretty unusable, and you'll have to lodge a complaint with Telkom, who are at the time unable to confirm or deny that your exchange is congested. They can however console you with the news that they are working on the issues, and that your exchange should be fixed,

some time this year.

Yep. Same issue here. Not quite as bad as OP, but enough to make the line unusable for gaming at specific times (weekend nights mainly).

You know, we should compensate for ADSL being a "best effort service" buy paying them using the "best effort remuneration!"

Wouldn't it be cool if you could get everyone on your exchange to opt in to shaping rules until they sort it out - thus all those torrent monkeys would not kill your gaming experience after hours.

Hell no. They must fix that *** not gloss over the problem with shaping. Once you start with bandaid solutions then that become the status quo.

I think Bern means, as a neighbourhood, not through Telkom.

I agree though: As soon as 18:00 hits, the line spead dies an instant death. That can only mean we have an infestation of "torrent monkeys"

And it's not just the gaming that suffers - I find myself rather watching TV than using the net because I have enough frustration at work, don't need more when I come home.

I've had this a few times now. TelkomZA rep on here is amazing to get the limits on the backhaul bumped a little every time it is an issue now. Really give the telkom online social media team a chance to get you sorted out, most probably faster than the call center.

Glingfram, that is what I meant. Basically make sure the exchange is still getting hammered, but try make sure users that are have more legitimate use can still do work and gaming. Torrents should always take a back seat. If you need to see it NOW then stream.

With you on the Telkom social media point. My point is that their strategy to fix congestion issues is either fairly well hidden or non-existent. If we as the public had an idea of what the strategy is, and where they are in terms of implementing it, there would be a bit more patience.

Lol 'torrent monkeys' are full paying subscribers like you and have a choice as to how they use their line.

Torrent Monkey:

> Will list ~50+ torrents without any limits whatsoever.
> Will back themselves 10/10 times with quoted argument (not saying you're one.)
> Usually has an ego that goes with previous point.
> Most likely attention seeker, for eg: Facebook status to follow "hey ive got up to date episodes! who wants?"
> Won't understand why later that night, he wants to do some online gaming * hectic lag * then rages out on everyone completely.

Any points missed?

Hi. I've got congestion on my exchange as well. Been dealing with Telkom on this forum and phoning the call centre. Can't give me an ETA as to when problem will be fixed, Always get told my fault has been escalated with the technical department and the technical department will phone me back (never do).

So I'm going to keep phoning until this gets sorted out and everyone who is having this problem should do the same. Maybe if enough people keep on their backs they may speed things a long.

Nope, they will just invent a process for us all to follow that leads to ad dead end.

Sitting with the same **** now, got confirmation from Telkom at least that it is indeed congestion and my fault reference has been linked to the others. No update on when they plan to fix the issue though and apparently the public isn't allowed to speak to the planners.

My only alternative is to look at other services now.
