So I'm presently in the Durban on "vacay" & my steed/mode of transportation is a white 2014 f/lift Polo Vivo Conceptline 1.4 55kw with 25k on the clock.

Talk to me about the expression "The Fastest Car is a Rental Car".

I need to navigate the rather hectic inclines of Chatsworth & Phoenix & the like & lets just say the above expression is rather true

So who here unfortunately tends to "let loose" their rented car

Nothing handbrake turns like a rental... they say.

I don't abuse my rentals, the risk is too costly. Also, anyone else notice that rental car's clocks are often horribly wrong? I'm sure this must bug other people.

With a R3500 excess on an Avis vehicle, you might want to think carefully about that approach

I recently spent a month (!) with one of Avis' mighty Hyundai i10s (in white, of course), and for the first time in my life I had to worry about finding my car in parking lots. Apart from its complete lack of memorability, there was nothing else memorable about the toaster of a car.

I'm the other way round - more careful with someone else's car than with my own. Rentals get gentle and careful treatment.

You can drive a car without crashing and still rev, drive quickly and accelerate/brake like a madman... No excess if the valves come out the bonnet...

Had a Fiat Punto 1.4 on hire, that was great fun. Especially because there was air in the brakes so you either stopped violently or didn't, I stopped violently

Just to be clear guys in my context "abuse" just means inefficient driving like high revving on steep hills & late shifting & such.

Not stupid stuff like driving a manual like an auto ie. no clutch use & driving with handbrake on etc.

Yeah rentals are fun, as long as you don't crash them, suppose many drivers have the same exact idea.....

Also for many people driving a smaller car is a BIG downgrade.....

Was in Bloem on Monday, had the fastest i10 in Bloem I think.

nothing like going all the way to 6000rpm and then car telling you to shift to 5th lol. and nothing like handbrake turns of course.

Had a Sparky in JHB once nope, just dont. before that was nice Fiesta - now that was nice to drive and was much respect for that car.

Rental car. The best 4x4 ever. Did the pass between Citrusdal and Ceres (passing the farmers with their 4x4s) in a Hyundai Atos.

The only time I've left terra firma in a car is in a rental
There is this epic rise and dip in the road just before one of our big clients, hit that at more than 60km/h and you're airborne for a moment. On route to another client there is an epic one, you need to be doing about 90-100km/h though, but you can get a second or two of airtime - enough for a couple of warning lights to come on in the dash and that cool weightless feeling.
There is also a legend in the office that on one occasion our boss broke an axle on the first road

Nothing revs like a rental!

I have taken rental cars in PLZ around the nearby racetrack there a few times when nobody was around. Was awesome.

Ive also taken a few rental cars around the dirt loop on top of Signal hill in Bloem before heading back to the airport. That track is great!!

Otherwise im generally responsible and drive it like my own car but sometimes one has to have a bit of fun in the lonely evenings out of town.

My GF is currently fighting with Europcar - they are claiming she damaged the rental she had for less than a week when her car is in for repairs.

Be careful with these rental idiots.

Where do you go on holiday?

In my experience you can for 3/4 days for the cost of 1 days rental.

Just did it on a trip to Cape Town a few weeks ago as well.

I drive my own car to holiday.

I was basing my comments on this article where they paid R250 to get from the Jo'burg CDB to Sandton.
