That fee includes road-side assistance :)

Roadside assistance entails another beetle pulling up in front of you and hitching that A-frame to tow you back to thier depot and then you get into the tow vehicle and drive off. :p

My last two rentals weren't the fastest cars.

A Chevy Spark...you needed to rev the crap out of whether you wanted to or not otherwise it didn't go anywhere in the hilly climbs of Jo'burg.

Before that a Nissan Micra was geared so badly, I'm guessing they use the same gearbox from the 1.6 in the 1.2/1.4 (can't recall), because 1st gear was too high and 2nd gear too low so you had to granny clutch it to go over a speedbump which in turn would burn the thing out.

However once upon a time I had a very ****ty Ford Fiesta that was in the workshop every other week after 6000km from brand new. I got a Ford Bantam for a number of days at one point...which made the fastest/best 4x4 the world had ever seen...

It did everything except the hill climb on a reasonably accessible 4x4 Trial down here in the Cape at great speed and with gusto. The only reason I didn't attempt the hill climb was because I had done it once before in the middle of the night while drunk with a Mazda 323 from the 80's...and beached it on top.

*****

I only drive them like I stole them when the company booked them and especially when they were cheap about it. When I'm paying for it I'm much more respectable.

Just to be clear guys in my context "abuse" just means inefficient driving like high revving on steep hills & late shifting & such.

Think of it as a Top Gear test thingy ...... What would Hammond, May or Clarkson do in the car ..... and you should be fine

According to Fazda a rental car is the most loved and care for car in the world and you should always try to buy one when you can.

I've bought two ex-rentals in the past ten or so years, and never had a problem with either of them. They were both own by friends in between the rental and me, but they were perfectly fine.

No it's the other way round.

Because they've lived a hard life and have survived...they will keep on surviving.

Owned an ex-rental myself and it had less issues than any other car I know about.

I've also owned an ex rental for the last four years, and the only thing I've had to do apart from routine servicing is replace a number plate bulb.... Rental cars are normally used by business people and tourists, most of whom are not that interested in revving the crap out of an econobox. Grannies and rice boys normally don't rent cars.

So I'm presently in the Durban on "vacay" & my steed/mode of transportation is a white 2014 f/lift Polo Vivo Conceptline 1.4 55kw with 25k on the clock.

Take to me about the expression "The Fastest Car is a Rental Car".

I need to navigate the rather hectic inclines of Chatsworth & Phoenix & the like & lets just say the above expression is rather true

So who here unfortunately tends to "let loose" their rented car

Bah, watch out. Woodford Car hire and Europ car hire all track their vehicles very closely. They called me at 2 in the morning to please reduce my speed below 150. Very politely as well. If you don't, you either get a 3.5k fine (Woodford) or they will not honour any warranties that you purchase (Europa Car)

What’s The Best Rental Car You’ve Ever Driven?

Rental cars can help or hinder your holiday plans, but what's the best car you've ever hired?

Rental cars are the fastest cars you can drive. That’s an undeniable fact. But not all rental machines are created equally. Sometimes, they’re plasticky boxes that suck all the fun out of driving, while other times, they can wind up being the best car you’ve ever driven.

From international rental companies and corporate fleets to local hire companies and mobile services that offer you cars by the hour, we’re treated to a multitude of options when it comes to borrowing a car.

According to one US rental firm, its most popular choice is the Hyundai Accent sedan, while in Russia you might end up stuck with a Proton for your road trip around St. Petersburg. But popular doesn’t always mean good.

Instead, let’s talk about the hidden gems you’ve borrowed on your travels, day trips or automotive adventures.
