Cape Town’s oldest pub in the city, The Fireman’s Arms, has burnt down. A video created by Dean Ryan, was posted to Facebook in the early hours of the morning revealing a shocking blaze in the much loved local.

“Established in 1864, Fireman’s Arms is one of the finest and oldest pubs in Cape Town providing fine beers and wines with exquisite food and light meals. The pub has undergone renovations and improvements over the years while keeping the original building and ambiance, it offers high definition viewing and big screen events to it’s patrons while offering exceptional service in a relaxing and traditional setting.” – Fireman’s Arms website.

walk or stumble ?

Reply had to climb over Hostel wall to get out, The Crow Bar, The George, Seagulls, Diaz, Firemans, Basin Street were all within walking distance of my hostel, I took full advantage of my boarding school career...

My time in that specific area was pre Waterfront, 86 - 91......
Club scene was just moving in with Trammps..... It was all quite an eyeopener for this country boy..

A friend of mine just send me a clip of the blaze, but I cannot post it on here..... It looks like a Christmas Tree gone rogue..

I know the previous owner who confirmed the damage is mainly to the outside, so it might not be as bad as it looks :)

bit of a technicality if memory serves: Fireman's is in one of the oldest buildings in Cape Town, the building itself predates Percy's, but it was a fire station at some point and wasn't a pub for as long as the building has been standing

so oldest pub in terms of who's building is the oldest vs who's pub has been a pub for the longest time

or I was just drunk at the time when I gathered this bit of info

Had a fire there a few years back and was restored very well, hopefully they will do the same again.
