The men who grew Capitec from 25,000 to 22 million clients

Since its first year in operation, Capitec has grown from roughly 25,000 to 22 million customers, and three of its initial stakeholders — André du Plessis, Henk Lourens, and Gerrie Fourie — are largely to credit for its success.

Capitec was founded by Michiel le Roux and Riaan Stassen in March 2001, and it has grown to be the largest consumer bank in South Africa in terms of customer numbers.

While I have been a satisfied Capitec customer since 2006, there are some anomalies not in full public view that are do not sit well with everybody

Their method of debt recovery is very fierce for people who fall into arrear. Perhaps because of the lack of due diligence made during a loan application, many customers who have fallen into arrears are treated unkindly. This has attracted the interest of the banking ombudsman as quite justifiably, some customers have been unable to come to a satisfactory repayment arrangement due to the bank's lack of empathy

About 18 months ago, Capitec stopped processing payments to PayPal. Their staff were not informed and this led to wasted hours trying to find out what had gone wrong. After 4 months, Capitec acknowledged that their communication could have been better. The reasons given were unsatisfactory security at PayPal's end.

Logging on to Internet Banking requires a selfie to be taken each and every time. This never works first time, sometimes takes 5 or more tries or just does not work. In addition, you are required to scan a QR code. The timeout of 50 seconds expires before you are presented with your account information

What can achieved without government involvement is TRULY AMAZING.

Get the app password wrong too many times and and trip to a branch is necessary. PITA.

Why not just use the app. You need to take a selfie to activate the app, but after that you just use your fingerpring on your smart phone. I cant think of anything that you cant do on the app.
