I compared the local PS2 price to the overseas prices when it launched. It was hugely overpriced here and continued to be so for years. This isn't surprising as the distributor had the market to themselves.

I don't think I'm being unreasonable. you can get a 32" LCD now for R7k, with the rate they're dropping and the competition in the market, I think R4k in about 12-18 months is pretty do-able ;)

i bought my ps2 overseas just after it came out in SA it was 3 times less. So basically, ps3 is being launched at $500, it will be about 10 grand in beautiful, SA...where democracy rips you off!

It's just a monopoly situation. Now that Playstation has real competition Ster Kinekor may decide to rely on the name to keep prices high. It's what I'd do if I was them, at least initially. If that doesn't work they can fall back on competitiive pricing.
