The vaal drainage area is in good shape compared to last year
Dams in the vaal system are standing at 82% compared to 49% last year, although there are some that still too low.

Just in: Three confirmed dead, numerous others injured as tornado hits West Rand

Krugersdorp Police have confirmed that three people were declared dead after the tornado that hit the Tarlton area earlier today.

“One person died when a huge tree fell on a truck. The truck was carrying about 50 workers, nine of whom were injured.
They were taken to various hospitals,” said Sergeant Tshepiso Mashele, spokesperson for Krugersdorp Police.

In Tarlton, the second person died after a wall collapsed on top on him. Two other people were taken to hospital with injuries.

In the Muldersdrift area, a third person passed away, also after a wall fell on him at a construction site.

Three inquests were opened, one at each of the relevant police stations.

Okay, I live less than 800m from Protea Ridge primary school where a number of children were injured too. I saw the storm coming, it lasted for about 10 minutes with massive hail and some wind. But, I did not see or experience any tornado.

Was hectic. I left work at 3:30 in Sandton and only got home 1h30m later. My home had 45mm of water between 6AM and 5PM.

Some of the stuff I saw:
Massive flooding on William Nicole in both directions between Sandton drive and Republic. Cars tried going through and flooded their engines so even after the water went down traffic was a mess. One lady in a brand new Porche was stalled in the dip just before Republic along with two other cars making a 4 lane road 1 lane in essence. People where driving into oncoming traffic on the other side to get around the mess.

In Randburg on Republic I saw a 50KG manhole cover that the water had blown out of its hole and moved two meters up hill somehow. Was in the middle of a lane of traffic.

On pres Fouche drive near the Bromhof centre I saw a complex that had lost a 30m section of wall that fell over into a parking lot onto parked cars. Was a mess. A neighbour of our complex (free standing house) also had his boundary wall knocked flat and his home flooded. Was going to feel bad but the owner is a proper idiot. He built an illegal lapa near our complex that messes up our insurance values a while back. Council ordered him to remove it and he just ignored them. He set his dogs on our old retired complex maintenance manager back in the day when he tried to talk to him. So ya, couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

Fortunately in all my 1h30 min of sitting in the storm the hail that hit me periodically was generally small so my car is fine. The hailstones in Roodepoort where much much bigger apparently.

I left work in Randburg at 3pm, got home in Wilgeheuwel just as the storm started, closed my garage door as the hail stones started falling, dived into the house. Strangely enough ours were around the size of golf balls but we didn't have as many issues as the surrounding area, I am glad we decided to not go to karate though, as it would've been heading towards the real big storm.
Also it's free hold house not free standing ;-), still not sure why South Africans keep using free standing to mean a free hold.
Did his lapa blow down? Cause that would've been awesome.

I am starting to wonder the same.

Like I said, I was right next to the school when it happened. We had some hail damage - broken roof tiles, windows, etc. I watched the storm come and go in about 10 minutes, but never saw any tornado. The first time I heard was when they said it formed in Muldersdrift.
