Yeah cos no other storms are allowed to have strong winds, right?
What other storm follow a clear line of localised destruction with tornado strength winds?

It takes a lot to flip a car over and to lift the entire roof of a building like that.
A tornado is the logical explanation even though no one were able to take a photo because they were to busy hiding from the large hail.

There was destruction, flooding and damage all over Gauteng yesterday, we had 5 trees blown over in our suburb alone, that's many kilometers South of Cradlestone.

When the SA Weather Service starts calling it a tornado, then I will join in.

I always remember the big thunderstorms coming in from the S/SW. This time it was W/NW. Often when it comes from the north it's that set-in rain as opposed to a roof ripper like yesterday.

Tornado implies that image of an actual twister, big column of wind.

strong winds <> tornado

but tornado = strong winds.

So they must scrap tornado and add hurricane force?
pffffft, in the great non-storm of Cape Town in June this year vehicles got blown over at "strong gale" wind speeds, not even "storm" and long way from "hurricane", like this truck for example:

Also, localised path of destructions due to the focus of the wind at a certain point moving in a certain direction. There is a definite clear path for the damage caused up and above the normal damage caused by winds in the same area.

I had a chuckle this morning listing to CliffCentral. Someone make a comment that it is curious, with the amount of churches in the East and West Rand, and by consequence the large amount of worshipping going on, that these areas are consistently hit with severe "acts of God".

So far it seems SAWS has not ruled on whether the storm yesterday was a tornado or not as far as I am aware.

The SABC weatherman this morning basically unpacked the situation as tabled by Lazylion. It is only observations that will be able to confirm if a tornado formed or not.

Either way, while we are all arguing about semantics, many have been very badly affected by yesterdays events. And only those that were directly affected can tells us.

As already pointed out, how does a vehicle get turned upside down and a couch land up in a tree if there was not some force strong enough to do that?

Doubt it has any less or more churches than anywhere else.

My question though would be... Cliffcentral? Geesus dude

It is simple if one tracks over many years the patterns of storms over the Witwatersrand. Yes an old term but it applies as the current provincial boundaries do not allow for such an analysis.

And it has nothing to do with Religion :D

I'll be honest here.

That car seems to have been standing next to a Pavement. So the wind could have toppled it over if the car was pushed against the pavement. My issue is the localisation of the damage.

From all the pics that were posted and from what i have seen , this can only be caused by a Tornado. A small one, but nevertheless a " Tornado"
