That polo driver got home in the nick of time and thought "Yesss! Made it under the carport before the hail got here. Safe as houses, baby."

Jaezus... people in SA really love to exaggerate!

https://northcoastcourier.co.za/95222/take-note-whatsapp-weather-hoax-rounds/

As heavy rains and strong winds batter the KZN coast today (Tuesday) social media has been abuzz with videos, pictures and warning messages.

Included in the hype is a message about ‘Hurricane Sfiso’ which has been doing the rounds on WhatsApp.

The message reads:

“WEATHER ALERT: Hurricane Sifiso to hit KZN, please keep in doors as this storm is classified as a category 3 storm. Heavy gale force winds predicted at 90km/h with Gusts of 120km/h reported by Weather ALERT SA. Storm expected to subside in 3-4 days, Avoid travelling in these conditions. Please be cautious people. FORWARD TO FRIENDS & FAMILY.”

This message has been circulating on social media since early September.

Again... no mention of any Tornado...

Gauteng storms knock out MTN towers...
https://techcentral.co.za/gauteng-storms-knock-mtn-towers/77435/

tornado
tɔːˈneɪdəʊ/Submit
noun
a mobile, destructive vortex of violently rotating winds having the appearance of a funnel-shaped cloud and advancing beneath a large storm system

That video of the N1 definitely shows a vortex and funnel cloud. It may not have reached the ground, but the definition doesn't say it has to.

Especially since Hurricanes form over the Atlantic and cyclones over the Indian and Pacific, so the name would be Cyclone whatever.
If you look at the windmap on something like Windytv the circular motion is there for it to be a cyclone. (Kzn storm today) obviously it just needs to reach the required wind speeds which I doubt will happen?
What's missing for that to be classified as a tropical storm? Is it all about wind speed?

The word cyclone can be confusing.

A tropical cyclone is a very specific storm. Same thing as a hurricane but we call them tropical cyclones. Where cyclonic means a system that rotates thanks to the Coriolis effect.

Thunderstorms comes in various forms but super cells are cyclonic or anticyclonic but they are turning storms. Also called mesocyclones. Only about 1 in 5 supercells produce a tornado.

The latest SAWS Synoptic chart.

ma_sy.jpg

Shows three distinct low pressure areas in the East. All are referred to as 'cut off lows".
They rotate clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere, which then means you could call them Cyclones.

The definition can be found here

<60km/h : Tropical Depression
60 km/h< x <110 km/hr : Tropical Storm
>110 km/h = Tropical Cyclones

As already stated these would probably be better referred to as super cells or mesocyclones, rotating clockwise.

So I'm trying to pinpoint some of the video locations of the reported funnels:

This one looks like it's here (ish):
