Not sure I understand why SAWS is so reluctant to record "sightings" of tornados these days? Afterall in the good olde days they would have had to accept a word of mouth account by an eye witness as proof of a tornado.

Now there are videos and photos to back it up? Especially if these are geo stamped (or whatever the correct term is), which they probably are. Most people do not disable notifications on the Camera Apps?

Yeah, I don't know why they have an issue with this.

Also would people rather be warned in advance by their insurance company about possible hail with a 50% hit rate or not at all? I see people like to complain that they got a message from their insurer but there was no hail in their area.

I prefer the warnings to no warnings - I will accept a 1000 wrong warnings than to miss one and get plastered by a hail storm.

It's because tornadoes seem phenomenal. look I agree with lazy lion but I can't disagree with the videos showing clear evidence of funnel clouds and the evidence of a damage path.

The funnel cloud itself being in the air doesn't mean it's not touched down:

It will be crazier to think a rare event such as a microburst caused this damage not to mention along a path. What I don't understand is this twister should be on a million cameras. It apparently crossed right in front of ruimsig and featherbrook. surely someone has video of it with full on debris and such like?

Update on the SAWS Report of the storms in October:

http://www.weathersa.co.za/images/d...ONSE TO STORMS OF 9 AND 10 OCTOBE R 2017.pdf

Here's a very detailed description from Dr. Leigh Orf of a computer model describing how supercell storm structures work. Leigh Orf started this project for the FAA to study downbursts winds in single cell and multicellular thunderstorms which are the most common type of lightning storms Johannesburg residents are used to.

After practically eliminating the accidents caused by microburst producing weather systems his team started focusing on upping the resolution of their model to simulate supercell storms for better understanding of the most severe thunderstorm systems.

Is a interesting watch and channel for people who like a bit of science. ;)

Two different issues:
1. The SAWS press release is a bit more coherent than the interview by the CEO. Should probably be appended to the other thread: https://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showth...attered-by-faulty-equipment-decries-CEO/page2
2. Simulations and data analysis are fascinating, but are decades ahead of the current capabilities of the current SAWS equipment.

Ah I didn't even see this thread.

And yeah I don't think SAWS is even close to analysing storm systems in such a way but remember this is a scientific institution. The results belong to the world and is unbelievably interesting.

Overcast most of the morning but cleared around midday. Some cloud build up in the North West and distant rumbling and grumbling, but that is it so far.
