Very little has happened on the radar front in the last 5 years. A few were upgraded after 2010, but nothing like what was promised in those links. As soon as the World Cup was over, budgets vanished.
On most days only 6-8 radars are working (several are habitually offline). Given that the winter rainfall areas contribute marginally (CT, Geoge & PE), its often only 5 useful ones, with very limited overlap, and large gaps.
The Cape Town radar is on top of Constantiaberg (not at the airport). There may be portable ones, but the data is not shared online. It doesn't seem like they are trying very hard (as noted in previous comments).
Yes, that is what we were told at the time. Once the magic words "Soccer World Cup" could no longer be used, the budgets just dried up. The upgrade projects stopped and maintenance of the old, as well as the new Radars, became quite a problem.
Even trying to find out what the list of sites was an issue. We tried in our project to always keep the radar sites in mind when planning fibre routes so that access points on the fibre route could be positioned to allow either a direct connection via fibre or via microwave.

Tried many times to use that App. More often down and broken. Was unusable over the holidays. Even filed a string of issues with their contact centre, never got a single reply or acknowledgement of receipt. So no, dont use it regulalry because their maintenance effort is pathetic.
