Nice info in this thread.

Does anyone know how much it costs to install those Harvey roof tiles. I've got a corrugated iron roof, so I'd like to install these tiles on top of the existing roof.

I got a quote - for a 2-bedroom house in JHB. Between R40k - R60k

Depends entirely on the size of the roof, and the structure underneath the corrugated sheeting..

You will need new underlay, new battons and then the roofing tiles, which I THINK are around R6 - R8 each... and you use about 12 per sqm.

Yep, the prep work is more labour intensive than the actual tiling itself.

Give these guys a call, they can cover the corrugated roof with harvey tiles: http://abacusroofing.co.za/ and are the ones who quoted me.

Interestingly in my case it is almost the same price to cover with harvey tile as it is to have a company treat and paint my rusty iron roof. Obviously getting my own labourers to do the job would make treating and painting the roof the cheaper option..

Thanks guys. I'm in the middle of a small renovation project, and the quotes you receive varies greatly. Like paving for instance. The quotes I received ranged from 40 - 80 per sqm for labour only, and that excludes the excavation work(levelling the the ground). I decided to hire 4 laborers at 150 per day, and completed the excavation and compacting myself. If the area was smaller I would have attempted the paving myself as well. Sometimes it pays to get your hands dirty.

I can give you the contact details of my builder, just for the roof part of my extension he charged me R8k in total, and the material costs about R6k for the tiles etc (as others mentioned, it all depends on the size, i needed 700 roof tiles, and that cost me about R4k)

This is he 1 rooms roof extension he done: (And he charged me R4k for this room, and another R4k for the other 2 rooms that will be next to this room)

So in light of this thread, i thought i would share some of my home renovation photo's. I have a few others to add at a later stage, but this was the most recent one i am doing.
It is currently the spare bedroom in our house, but am cleaning it up for my 2 daughters. Their current room will then become the spare room. The first photo gives an idea of the massive old cupboard, and the 2 entrance doors into the bedroom. 20140628_143829.jpg 20140628_143836.jpg 20140628_143947.jpg So the first thing i had to do was close of the entrance door to the right, which leads into my future study. 20140713_144427.jpg Bricked 20140719_114249.jpg plastered 20140803_093506.jpg screeded.

I then wanted a smooth ceiling. It had cover strips over the joints. 20140803_093512.jpg 20140803_140043.jpg cover strips removed and screeded. 20140803_140056.jpg 20140809_111137.jpg Then it was sanding and painting. 20140809_145141.jpg Nice and smooth

I would like to do most renovations myself but time never permits!

I have two guys who are builders by trade and I get them to do most work. I have saved a fortune by not using the large contractors. For example, a large roofing company quoted me R10 300.00 excluding VAT to repair some ceilings. My builders charged me R950 labour to do the same job, and the job is perfect! Materials were maybe a grand on top of that.

Next was to get rid of the 500kg cupboard 20140906_105512.jpg 20140907_133837.jpg You can see the hole from another project i did, which i will post at some time. Then after all that was done, it was time to scrub the walls and paint. Here are a few to show what the old door entrance lloks like. You can't see it was ever there. 20140914_121908.jpg 20140914_121848.jpg

This weekend was dedicated to removing the carpet and installing laminate flooring. 20140921_165521.jpg 20140921_165527.jpg 20140921_165603.jpg . Just have to do the skirting tomorrow, and then will post some completed pics. What i haven't included in here is the crack repairs, the varnish removal of the windows and frames, and subsequent painting of everything. But it was all done.
