Facelifted Hyundai Elantra unveiled with fresh look, more tech

The facelifted Hyundai Elantra has been revealed in the United States, with the updated version of the Korean automaker’s sedan sporting fresh styling and more technology (although engine options have been carried over unchanged).

Up front, you’ll immediately notice the new bonnet, fenders, grille and headlamps (LED items on flagship models), while the refreshed rear end features a new bootlid and redesigned taillamps. New alloy wheel designs – ranging in size from 15 to 17 inches – have also been rolled out.

Inside, the changes are not quite as extreme, but include redesigns for the centre console, air vents, temperature controls and instrument cluster, as well as the addition of a new storage tray. Perhaps more importantly, though, the updated Elantra gains debuts Hyundai’s next-generation AVN 5,0 infotainment system, which features an upgraded processor, an eight-inch screen and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto functionality. Wireless smartphone charging is also available.

Big-car safety kit optionally available on the facelifted Hyundai Elantra sedan include forward collision-avoidance assist, lane keep assist, driver attention assist and safe exit assist. Blind-spot collision warning with rear cross-traffic alert and lane change assist are also offered.

No word yet on when the updated Elantra is expected to arrive in South Africa.

Hyundai’s Elantra gets striking new look

Hyundai’s Elantra has been given a bold new look along with an updated cabin and new-generation infotainment.

The midlife facelift brings a striking new front end complete with a large ‘cascading’ grille that’s intersected by razor sharp headlights.

The sedan also gets a complete overhaul at the other end, with new taillights and a smoother looking bootlid, with the number plate housing shifting down to the bumper.

The cabin keeps its core design, but there are a few smarter looking trimmings, as well as redesigned air vents and controls and a new instrument cluster.

It also gets Hyundai’s new-generation AVN 5.0 infotainment system featuring a larger 20cm touch-screen, and all the latest mod cons including Apple CarPlay and wireless charging. An Infinity Premium Audio system is available for those seeking a high-end sound system.

All that applies to the US spec Elantra though - global models could differ and, of course, at this stage there is no word on South African availability or specs.

For the record, upper spec US models are available with a whole suite of driver assistance gadgets, including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (with pedestrian detection), Lane Keep Assist, Drive Attention Alert and Safe Exit Assist.

Engine options include the familiar 1.6-litre turbopetrol and normally aspirated 2-litre, as well as a 95kW 1.4-litre turbopetrol in the ‘Eco’ version. The latter would certainly make an interesting addition to the local range.

Hyundai Elantra Facelifted for 2019

Hyundai has revealed a facelifted Elantra sedan, which features a radical new look, new safety technology and enhanced features. While the model pictured here is American-spec, we expect the new Elantra to make its way to South Africa in 2019.

The popular Hyundai Elantra compact sedan has been facelifted for 2019 and boasts a raft of new features, with a particular focus on safety and convenience. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), "it has been shown that Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) and Forward Collision Warning (FCW) have resulted in a 50% reduction in rear-end collisions". This tech makes its debut in the 2019 Hyundai Elantra along with Lane Keep Assist.

Safety aside, there are other changes. There's a new front-end replete with redesigned headlights, new alloy wheel designs and a new-look rear fascia. The interior features a new-look centre cluster and some trim tweaks to the trim. High-end derivatives will come standard with niceties such as a wireless charging pad and an upgraded infotainment system, which comes with a faster processor and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, as well as HD traffic satellite navigation.

The key changes to the 2019 Elantra are on the outside, but the cabin has received a nip and tuck too

"Refinements to both the interior and exterior were initiated on the 2019 Elantra to maintain its emotional design character and include affordable and desired features," said Scott Margason, director, product planning, Hyundai. "The hood, front fenders, fascia, grille and headlights as well as the rear fascia, trunk and taillights each have been redesigned to convey a catchy and confident image. On the rear of the vehicle, the license plate has been relocated to the lower fascia to further enhance the new body sculpture."

Engines for the US model range include the 110 kW Nu 2.0-litre MPI Atkinson Cycle engine and a Kappa 1.4-litre Turbo-GDI with 95 kW. There's no word on the 1.6-litre GDI motor, which we get in the current Hyundai Elantra. We'll confirm when the updated Elantra will be available in South Africa in due course. Stay tuned for details.

Edgy Hyundai Elantra Teased

Hyundai is preparing to reveal an all-new, 7th generation Elantra on 17 March 2020 and the firm has dropped a few teaser images and a short video to whet your appetite.

Based on the teaser images you see here, the new Elantra’s design has become slick and edgy with a coupe-like silhouette and some eye-catching angular body lines. Hyundai calls it a sporty-four-door coupe and says it stands longer, lower and wider than the outgoing Elantra.

Powertrain details for the new Elantra are scarce but we hope that Hyundai matches the new sporty look with a suitable powertrain that will do the product justice. It’s worth noting that the current Elantra Turbo Elite Sport employs a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine with 150 kW and 265 Nm and is equipped with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Hyundai working on 202kW 'N' version of new Elantra - report

When Hyundai released the first design sketch of its next-generation Elantra earlier this week, the company boldly promised that it would return to its “sports sedan roots”.

Although the Elantra has hardly boasted a sporting pedigree until now, the new model could certainly thrust itself into the sports sedan ring if the latest rumours from South Korea turn out to be true.

According to Korean Car Blog, Hyundai is said to be working on an ‘N’ version of the seventh-generation Elantra, which will share its 2-litre turbopetrol heart with the i30N.

The publication also reports that the powerplant will be tuned to the same 202kW output as its hatch sibling, but while the latter is only sold with a six-speed manual gearbox, the Elantra N will also be offered with Hyundai’s new eight-speed DCT dual-clutch transmission, which makes sense given the sedan’s slightly more conservative target market.

Hyundai Elantra

Hyundai officially launched its all-new 2021 Elantra and Elantra Hybrid at The Lot Studios in West Hollywood with a special event broadcast around the world. This marks the world debut of the latest version of the popular compact sedan. The 2021 Elantra showcases Hyundai's latest ambitions, including a Sensuous Sportiness design identity, hybrid electric vehicle technology, and segment-first wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The car also provides exciting driving dynamics and the most progressive in-car experience in its class. Production of the 2021 Hyundai Elantra starts in the fall of 2020 in Ulsan, Korea and at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, and sales begin in the Q4 2020.

The all-new Hyundai Elantra is a compact sedan that the next generation wants to drive. It is for customers that are pragmatic and sensible yet disruptive and always questioning traditions. This daring and non-conforming mindset is evident in the progressive and exciting Elantra. It provides a better mobility experience as Hyundai becomes the "Smart Mobility Solution Provider" of the future.

To transform the 2021 Hyundai Elantra into its new four-door-coupe look, Hyundai engineers and designers had to make it longer, lower, and wider compared to the sixth-generation model. The 2021 Elantra gains 2.2 inches in overall length and 0.8 inch in its wheelbase, and the overall width is increased one inch. The overall height also dropped 0.8 inch, and the front cowl point was moved back almost two inches. These minor changes dramatically changed the shape of the car but had limited impact on cabin space. In fact, most key interior dimensions increased.

New (seventh-gen) Hyundai Elantra revealed with ‘four-door coupé’ look!

The new Hyundai Elantra has been unveiled, with the seventh-generation version switching from a traditional sedan body style to what the Korean firm describes as a “four-door coupé” look.

Hyundai says the newcomer is longer (at 4 620 mm), lower (at 1 435 mm tall) and wider (1 800 mm) than its predecessor, while its wheelbase has been extended to 2 700 mm. The brand describes the new Elantra’s suspension arrangement (which includes a fully independent multilink setup at the rear) as offering a “taut yet comfortable” ride.

In the United States, the new Elantra will be available with a naturally aspirated 2,0-litre petrol engine generating 110 kW and 179 N.m, and linked to what Hyundai calls an “intelligent variable transmission” with a chain-design belt.

North American markets will also receive a new hybrid powertrain featuring a 1,6-litre petrol mill (using a six-speed dual-clutch transmission) and a permanent-magnet electric motor powered by a lithium-ion-polymer battery with 1,32 kWh of capacity (the latter sited under the rear seats). Total system output for this model is 104 kW and 264 N.m.
