The man fighting DStv piracy in South Africa

Is it just me, or does anybody else get the impression this oke was the "corner" in school that not even the chess club wanted to hang out with and now that he's in a position with a little bit authority, he's "going to show them all" what big man he is?

You didn’t get into varsity, didn’t you? Don’t be so salty bud.

Too many Hollywood studios have gone bust. And DSTV is suffering. Regardless what you may think of the man, he has a noble cause and is willing to sacrifice his time to bring criminals to book and high security prison.

So how many of these "criminals" are actually convicted and sent to prison? Lots of arrests, but no information on what actually happens afterwards.

Afterwards - nothing much, suspended sentence ... , be a good boy/girl for 3-5 years, and you are good. All Frikkie is getting folks sentenced for so far is loading stuff on cheap Android boxes [ so called pre-loaded boxes ] and selling them to plebs, who are not able to set their own boxes up.

Massively successful, piracy operations.

Tho the last one seems to be a little better, but that still, has to go thru the courts, so we will see what happens there.

This guy is a good little corporate stooge and he must be so proud of himself. Those DSTV pirates are such a threat to SA society and we can all sleep peacefully at night, safe in the knowledge that such dangerous criminals are behind bars. Not that DSTV is even worth pirating when you have so many other options available.

How about going after the real criminals, the Multichoice board? They retrenched hundreds while giving themselves insane bonuses while sitting in Dubai.

Think of DSTV streams like ESKOM.

ESKOM power is taken. Hollywood movie is streamed from some other server.

ESKOM burns diesel and coal to provide the looted electricity.
Hollywood burns money and CEOs sacrifice to provide us with top notch entertainment which people loot.

DSTV is here to save us from the latter. Remember: happy Multichoice CEOs is something we should all strive for. Go team Irdeto! Go DSTV! Go Multichoice! Go magistrate. Go prosecutor. Go SAPS. Go Poollsmoor prison.

Apart from the military he pretty much did one thing for 31 years. Now he wants his career to mean something. Regardless of how successful he is, note that it's for MC, and Frikkie cannot stick it to the man because he has become it.

I don't know what to make of this bio on Frikkie Jonker, it's full of weird stuff no one would ever need to know about the dude.

Jonker started his career in the South African National Defence Force, serving as a captain until June 1993.

Wasn't it the SADF prior to 1994?

Why does anyone need to know that Frikkie served the Apartheid Regime as a captain?

Why does anyone need to know that his career started off in the military, is it in any way relevant to what he has been doing in the decades after he left the SADF?

He holds numerous security qualifications, including a Master’s degree in intelligence and security from the University of Leicester.

Presumably this correspondence course of 4 modules over 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time:

He also has a certificate in copyright and the business of creative industries from CISAC University and attended the International IP Crime Investigators College at Interpol.

Wow that is incredible, a certificate, I trust that the certificate is authentic.

He plays a critical role in highlighting piracy’s economic and cultural impacts, advocating for rights protection, and promoting a creative economy.

I have to ask, how exactly does piracy impact culture?

To all the pirates out there, did you know that every September 24th you are supposed to be doing a piracy pride parade through the streets?

He explained that Africa is a global dumping ground for inferior products.

Like repeats on DSTV.

This is practised not only in legitimate trade but also in the criminal underworld.

Pirated food being sold at spaza shops with poisonous additives?

“Outdated regulations, inefficient law enforcement, bribery and corruption all play a role in this,” Jonker said.

What would be useful there is specific examples of regulations that are outdated and need to be changed, maybe that would have been more useful than this bizarre Frikkie bio.

“Despite this, African authorities are doing a heroic job fighting cybercrime and content piracy. There have been huge successes in prosecuting content piracy operations.”

Maybe a few successes, have they been huge though or just hugely inflated?

He explained that when it comes to content piracy, Africa has low barriers to entry and a limitless demand for cheap content.

MonoChoice charges far too much, in turn that creates the demand for cheap content.

Jonker said changing people’s attitude to the crime of content piracy has to be an industry-wide campaign.

“The creative industry must unite and address the issue collectively, as they have done through pan-African initiatives like Partners Against Piracy,” he said.

Is Frikkie saying that his braai has PAP but there's no vleis?

Government attitudes are equally important. If content piracy is not taken seriously, it harms the country’s creative and entertainment sectors.

“When leading content businesses consider entering the African market, they need the reassurance that their content rights will be protected,” Jonker said.

He explained that if a country is unable to provide such guarantees, the investments do not materialise.

Sure, corruption throughout every level of government in SA impacts everyone, content piracy however is not something that impacts the ordinary citizen in their daily lives but does affect businesses and their profit margins.

South Africa is a third world country, it is corrupt as hell, businesses know this long before considering investing.

Jonked said the arrests are a significant step in their ongoing battle against digital piracy in South Africa.

“We are actively tracking additional targets. The message is clear — those participating in this illegal network will be brought to justice,” said Jonker.

Missed opportunity there to coin some new terms and phrases, for instance:
You will be Jonked, resistance is futile, just ask Frikkie.
Your ass will be Tronked by Frikkie de Jonker.

Hollywood stars and execs earn less and so that affects their culture.

To all the pirates out there, did you know that every September 24th you are supposed to be doing a piracy pride parade through the streets?

Well yes. And often the newest shows are not always shown. We also don't get many of the more artistic works out there. How many Criterion Collection films does DSTV show?

Pirated food being sold at spaza shops with poisonous additives?

Well for one that cops can't stop and search peoples' laptops, phones and glove boxes for pirated content. If you have an MP4 of some movie on your HDD, you'd better have a certificate from Hollywood that you can own that in SA.

While SA may be corrupt, I think NoChoice would like to focus 99% of the available resources on piracy. That way they can squeeze a few extra bucks out of everyone with older shows they can resell at any price given that piracy is also a competitor. With geoblocking and no more downloading or streaming of unauthorised streams people will have to pay any price to watch the art... garbage that is promoted to people by Hollywood, HBO etc.

Good point, MC should be alerted to check his credentials. Just imagine the fake content director has a fake certificate.
