South Africa's official matric pass rate for 2024 is 87.3%, an increase from the 82.9% pass rate of 2023.

Basic education minister Siviwe Gwarube announced the results at a briefing at the Mosaïek Church in Randburg on Monday, 13 January 2025.

To be fair, the number I find most meaningful is the percentage of those who started Gr1 12 years ago who completed matric last year. That number is generally scarily low.

Lol. I thought my matric was easy but just Googled and the national matric pass rate back then was 62.5%. So now I feel I wrote a decently difficult matric.

Well, that best encapsulates the success of our education system. Scholars who drop out midway aren't accounted for in simple matric pass rates. It reflects badly on a school to have learners fail, so they typically find ways to remove them from the system earlier.

It honestly baffles me why that should reflect bad on the Education system, learners can drop out for a variety of reason, mostly socio economic, why should that be borne by the Department of education?

And I think you are making up stories about the part where schools find ways to remove learners from the system because they are afraid it will make them look bad. There are way too many problems in SA, teenage pregnancy, poverty and inequality, general ill discipline that could better explain the dropping out.
