Cloud backup solutions provider Backblaze has released its hard drive reliability statistics for the third quarter of 2018.

Backblaze compared hard drives used in its operations – from Seagate, Western Digital, Toshiba, and HGST – for the report.

I’m not a fan of BB’s stats, although they’re about the only independent stats out there. They have a very unusual usage scenario - no end user/consumer has a similar way of using the drives.

Yeah that's the only things I've seen.

And doesn't really help in the application where reliability is at stake.

True, but one thing that I have noticed is that regardless of the manufacturer, the failure rates are pretty low.

my take-away from this - buy whatever's cheapest, chances of getting a lemon is pretty low.

Actually did a bit of comparison and the 5TB was the cheapest per terabyte in it’s class and cheapest overall.

Unlikely.

I stream stuff from a multi drive UnRAID which should be slower than a single drive setup and have never had an issue.

That includes 4K remuxes.
