I bought my gf a XBox a few years ago. She only started to use it last year. It is still one of the older model boxes, not these new ones that come with the Kinect. The other day it gave her a 3 Ring of Death. NOw I know or heard of people that can repair this.
My questions is:

1. Is there any reliable blokes in the Cape Town area that I can use?
2. Is it worth it in the long run.

The way I see it, I don't want to repair the unit, only to have it break down with the same problem a few months down the line, then i would rather buy her a new one.

My POV is that its not worth it. Mine RROD'd twice while I was still pondering on whether I'm going to have it fixed again someone broke into my place and stole it :D

Told the insurance rather to get me a PS3.

I got Red rings but no death. Three times. I guess I got a strong one. In each case i just pulled the power cable out and put it back in and carried on playing. My xbox is four years old now

pfft dude, those are not the ROD, the 4 rings go red if the power cable isn't plugged into the brick properly or if there is a problem with AV.
The dreaded ROD is the three ring, so to the OP check your cables first.

Now my one is 5 years old, and once it gave the red ring. I pulled out the plug quickly and it is still going strong

I managed to fix it. Firstly took two cotton buds, took of the cotton on one end of each. Then insert into the back where the fans are to stop it from circulating cool air(in essence overheating the unit). Then wait until one ring goes away, leaving you with 2 red rings, switch it off and let the unit cool down for about 5 minutes...plug in and enjoy!!!
