A new iPhone 6S Plus, 64GB, will now set you back R17 299. Last month this phone was going for R15 499. That's a R1800 price increase. Can the weak rand really be the only reason for this?

Definitely! At the beginning of December 2015 the ZAR/USD exchange rate was at ±1USD = 14.5ZAR. Currently it is on ±1USD = 16.5ZAR which is about 14% more. If you take the R15499 and add 14% to that, you get close to the current price of R17299.

US price - 849 plus state tax is around $925 total - R15,249 at current exchange rate.
UK price - 699 GBP - R16,467 at currency exchange rate.

Core just had to ensure that their markup remain healthy.
