This comic sums up my entire stance on piracy.

MyBroadband spoke to local ISPs, who said that there has been a spike in piracy following the COVID-19 pandemic.

And they know this how ?

“Our data indicates that customers on higher bandwidth links are less likely to pirate movies and series,” added RSAWEB.

“We saw an active coin miner campaign that inserts a malicious VBScript into ZIP files posing as movie downloads.”

There is still no cure for stupid.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but streaming pirated content is more "okay" in the eyes of the law than downloading it via torrent is.

If you torrent, you inevitably upload a small portion of the download, even if it is just the headers, and the *overlords* are counting on this to nail you for "distributing" content.

Distributing (uploading) content is a big no-no, but if you can somehow *only* download content, such as by streaming it, you should technically be safe from DCMA notices and stuff.

Your browser is also much better equipped to protect you (https so the ISP only sees domain info, ad- and javascript-blocker extensions, your IP isn't broadcasted to the "swarm" where you inevitably end up in a honeypot, etc.), if you take all the precautions you can to protect your session.

With that said though, if you use Google Chrome signed in with your Google and Facebook account to visit shady streaming sites without an adblocker, yeah, well, then you should expect the STD's coming your way. Your browser might end up with a case of SpOoKy VaGiNoSis after you finish your episode of the Gillmore Girls...

They might be legitimate 'files' that you are downloading via torrents..... ;)

I have a Netflix account but I still download Netflix series because it feels better if I worked for it. All these entitled people have no work ethic. It's sad, really.

I buy most of my stuff on iTunes and stream to Apple TVs (US account)

Our online service offering does suck in this country unfortunately. I have Netflix but don't use it much. The house has DSTV primarily for the news that runs on the TV's most of the time. I need to replace that soon.

Bypassing geo restrictions isn’t a valid license. You might as well be pirating it.
If you think that's the same thing as pirating it then you're mistaken. People are getting paid.

Isn't Apple the one that takes most of the profit and passes over only 60% to series/movie creators?
Even if that's the case surely they're both happy with the arrangement or they wouldn't have entered into it?
