The newly drafted rules for .ZA domains could be the end of .co.za, according to South African registrars

.com, .net, .org - all top level domains and cannot be touched by the South African government.

To hell with any co.za or .za domains. They are worthless and any person owning a co.za domain have no guarantee it will be there in a years' time.

This, plus there are so many new TLDs. They can go fly a kite.

  • Registrars must collect and store identity documents, physical addresses, and contact information of people wishing to register .ZA domains - Yes because we all know how safe these documents are and they'll never leak... Smells like some idiot in government is seeing a "RICA"-like tender... Given anyone in the world can reg a domain, what you gonna do when you're given GDPR-required data? or US data? or...
  • Registrars must provide broad-based black economic empowerment (BBBEE) information with their licence application — specifically details of BEE ownership. - Do the stupids realize a registrar does not need to, and in most cases won't, operate in the country for which it's selling domains? Again, sounds like there's some cadres trying to prop their kids domain business up in the background somewhere..

I find it hilarious and sad how the government thinks they have any power and authority over the domain and registrar space. All they going to do is move everyone off the .co.za domain. In this case we have choice unlike the other monopolies they normally extort cash from.

The hubris of this regime clearly knows no bounds.

This is going to backfire on them. No reason to use a .co.za anymore. Maybe just register shithole.co.za and move on.
The first part is true, there is no reason anymore. As far back as '17 there were negative connotations with the .co.za domain in terms of websites to do with international concerns.

Secondly, registering shithole.co.za as you said, would then attract all the FICA/RICA crap that you wish to avoid by not using a .co.za

New rules for .ZA domains a "smokescreen money-grab"

South African registrars who offer .ZA domains say new regulations drafted by the .ZA Domain Name Authority (ZADNA) will cause more harm than good.

Last month, ZADNA published draft regulations governing various entities in South Africa’s domain name ecosystem — such as registrars and registry operators.
