The official running thread™

Today's run went better. I can see on Strava/Garmin that my fitness is shot, but at least it felt better today.

I was never the fittest person, and even after running for a year, I struggled to do a consistent sub 35 min 5k.

I want to go assess with a biokineticist, and see if they can help develop a better training plan, as I've plateaued.

Why not start the day after tomorrow (because you need a rest day) with a Garmin training coach. You gotta go far slow to go short fast

I've done about 3 of the Garmin Coach 5k programs, and that is where I plateaued. I think there is some disconnect between what is expected from the program, and what I can achieve.

For instance, if the program for the day specifies a tempo run at 8min/km for 10 minutes, I just can't do it. At least not in hilly Joburg. But when I'm visiting my parents in Potch, which is about as flat as can be, then I can do it. And those programs are very generic.

Also, I've tried MAF, and didn't see much of an improvement, but that may be on me.

That is why I want to chat with a professional, to see where I can improve.

8min/k for tempo is quite a strange pace. It's more of a speed walk with the odd jog.
Do those on hills but for 2/3 minutes.
Helps a lot with form, strength and endurance.

The Garmin plans have different types of training.

Slow runs - slightly slower than your goal pace.
Goal pace runs - self-explanatory.
Tempo runs - slightly faster than the goal pace.
Hill repeats - self-explanatory.
Long runs - slow runs, but for at least an hour.

So my goal was to achieve a consistent 35min/5k, so a pace of 7min/km.
That is why there is an 8 min/km in my training plan. And yes, it is an awkward pace, but it probably falls in the MAF type training (slow and lower HR). But I'm fat and slow, so I'm struggling to maintain even this, especially when running in Joburg.

Did jhb north city marathon in the beginning of Feb with a horrendous time. I had to walk the last 12kms because I was cramping.

Doing Elands marathon on Saturday hopefully the cramps stay away and I can do a decent time. Also my wife's first marathon but I'm not running with her that's too much for my mind to handle.

4.24 for Elands marathon, almost an hour quicker than the last one I did just couldn't hold on to get under 4.20.

36 degrees at 11am made it a tough one but one of the most well organized events I have taken part in.

Happy with that outcome and will have it on my race calendar for next year.

Did the Magoebaskloof Ultra Trail 36km this weekend.

What a tough one, so much mud and rain, it was literally 2 steps forward and 1 step back, they eventually rerouted the people at the back as it was actually quite dangerous. But I would do it again tomorrow if I could :)

It took so long as you could only properly run about 50% of the route, the rest was slipping, sliding and crawling.

Yoh, brutal! Well done.

Ran the 21 at the Durban City marathon yesterday. Got my PB of 02:08:02. I could have got my sub 2 but I didnt have enough in me along the way.
Well done, I did it too, my first half-marathon. Not as quick as you though. :p

Well done on your first and to the start of many many more..
Find your rhythm and pace and enjoy every minute of the run. The fun is with the people around you.

Thanks, I really enjoyed it. Had a very specific goal in terms of pace and forced myself to slow down when I found myself going too fast. There will be other races to work on better times, but this one was just about going the distance without walking or slowing down.
