The official Ubiquiti Devices Q&A Thread

When I change my dns on my laptop to google dns, i cant access my console. Is this by design?
No -any dns should be usable unless you have setup firewall rules to block google dns etc

I’m new to Uinify range and recently got hold of a UnfiFi CLOUD KEY M/N: UC-CK. I installed the controller software on my laptop and it picks up my UAP AC PRO no issues. When trying to setup the Cloud Key via the Unify app , it detects it but when trying to set it up comes with the following error:

“Setup Failed
The setup process for this UniFi device was disrupted. If your account password is too long, please go to account.ui.com and update your password to a maximum of 64 symbols and try again.”

I’ve reset the password and same issue.

Updated the software on the controller upon initial setup same issue.

I reset the Cloud Key same issue. The light blinks white and then goes solid white.

What’s the correct procedure to install it? Via the App or Via controller software on laptop?

Am I correct the Cloud Key and Controller software on laptop serves the same purpose, just with cloud key it’s always on hence can monitor the network vs laptop if it’s off , you can’t view devices etc?

If so my plan is to have the cloud key setup, and don’t need the laptop always on to view network remotely.

Thanks in advance.

Correct, cloud key runs the controller for you..

Tried this process same issue 🙈
I was told it’s too old / firmware not supported etc , & advised to replace it with a USW-Ultra.

How’s the USW-Ultra ? Those using it any issues / limitations etc ?

Currently have a UAP PRO & looking to add 2 more AP’s.

Where can I purchase a used one ?

UC-CK is very old, and the firmware stopped a couple years ago at 7.2 or 7.3 and we are on 9.x now. However it should still work fine as there are a lot out there still running. Perhaps you are right and its a new setup issue.

You mean a UCG-Ultra not the switch and they work very well

Some Holiday specials on the Unifi Store - mostly last gen stock though

Not sure if this has been posted but this looks like a nice upgrade to the original mini:
Plus the price looks great too!

I’m looking to get into the prosumer range to setup at home / home lab with more advance management as in VLANS etc. From your guys experience between UniFi , HP Aruba Instant Access (not instant on) & Ruckus, which one offers greater control over managing your WiFi / Network ?

I’ve seen users complain about Ubiquity’s software updates giving issues along with WiFi speed issues vs Aruba / Ruckus AP’s .

Ideally it would be nice to have 1 brand so there’s easier management / compatibility etc.

My idea is:

3 AP’s (max)
(Is there a big difference going from WiFi 5 to WiFi 6 speeds in real world environment) ?

2 x PoE+ switches

Firewall

Currently using TP Link AX5400 / AX72 router. (Might upgrade if need be)

Small server rack / cabinet

Kindly add any other equipment required for starting a home lab environment, and Do’s and Dont’s to help avoid issues from your guys experiences.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated 🙏

You might get biased views asking this in a Unifi group

Their updates have improved over the years and generally are stable now. You also get a nice chunk of new features with each new update so that’s always nice

The kit is also decent for a home network with most of the more advanced functionality you would need. It’s pricier than an equivalent spec Tp Link Omada/ Reyee / Cudy though, not sure about the comparison to Aruba / Ruckus

Call me biased but I would go for Ubiquiti! Just beware of the rabbit hole though.
On a serious note, Ubiquiti have come a long way, my current setup has been running for more than 6 months without a reboot or hangup! My philosophy is to only do updates if major security patches are involved or if there is an additional feature that I need.

Thanks for the reply .

I forgot to mention reasons why I’m posting in this group , as there might be some that moved away from Ubiquity or moved to Ubiquity from using the other mentioned brands 😁

I'm moving into my new house in a couple of weeks, so it's time to look at new network infrastructure too. Going 2.5/10gbps throughout, this time, with the exception of a few 1gbps devices. Exciting times!

Congrads on the new house.
What setup you looking to get ?
