I just want it to be reasonably reliable and I have no experience with Xiaomi so any advice from anyone on this thread will be appreciated.

Just manage your expectations. Fornthe price, it is what it is, but for simple and basic use, it will be fine.

Like so many others here say "All you need is a phone that can message, call, and take a photo".

I got it to work. Turns out the cable that came with the phone was the issue. So I used a different and shorter cable.
