53% of South Africans believe that most people are killed by firearms – but the reality is that knives make up the most (47%) deaths, with only 16% of murders attributed to guns.

Time for Gun Free South Africa to change their name to Knife-Free South Africa.

If they ban knives people will kill with sticks and stones.

People will always find a way to kill someone. There are a big variety of tools that can do the job, including your bare hands.

Including the very dangerous chemical DiHydrogen-Monoxide.
The incidence of gun violence seems to be rising at an alarming rate. A recent stunning revelation is that in every single instance of violence involving guns, both in the U.S. and internationally, Dihydrogen Monoxide was involved. In fact, DHMO is often very available to those who would do harm to others. Meanwhile, apparently no efforts have been made to limit the availability of this potentially dangerous chemical compound.

South Africa has a much higher misperception level according to this study. Perhaps the above comment is therefore apropos.

Actually there are only 3 countries where "knives" is the correct answer and in all 3 countries they guessed poorly.

My guess is deaths in townships = more knives; surveyed people = mostly not in townships.

Actually... :) I read the full slide deck, which covers a lot more than the questions in the article linked above. There is actually a slide labeled misperceptions index, which you can see below:

I believe you’ve made that up and it has no basis in reality...

Agreed. I’ve never met anyone who has made that level of mistake. The only egregious geographic errors I have personally witnessed is once where someone referred to Africa as a country, and once someone thought that South Africa was a region in Africa and not an actual country.

A person must be a fool if he thinks the average American hasn’t heard of Britain, France, Japan, China, Germany or Russia, just as examples.

Never travelled, eh.

It never ceases to amuse me that a certain type of Sarfeffrikin still thinks First Word Foreigners are total poephols who think Africans ride to work on elephants and dodge lions in the streets.

They never seem to realise the joke's on them.
