Never travelled, eh.

It never ceases to amuse me that a certain type of Sarfeffrikin still thinks First Word Foreigners are total poephols who think Africans ride to work on elephants and dodge lions in the streets.

They never seem to realise the joke's on them.
Guess this is language targetted.. Nice, classy.

I have in fact met Americans that think exactly this.

But not really other first worlders.

Then again a large proportion of America is stuck in the way back when.

With GM closing all those Manufacturing plants I'd say they heard of china

Yep, even the most backward survivalist country bumpkin in America is likely to have something made in China and will also know where the AK-47 comes from...

The AK has been built in many countries over the years (around 30 countries iirc), but most people know it as a Russian design.

If you asked 10 Yanks which country built the AK, I’d be willing to bet 8 would say Russia.

That was just one example, I could have just said that the name Russia as the principal enemy country of the USA would be known by 99% of living Americans.

have actually traveled quite extensively, and have actually seen the blank looks on peoples faces when you mention south africa.
so I speak from personal experience, that when you live in such large countries, you forget there is such a big planet to see.

and many people dont know anything about other countries, other than the stereotype.

Nearly 20 years abroad for me and not much in the way of blank faces. We must move in different circles I guess...

Im sure if you speak to embassy staff, or university professors, people will know about south africa.

but if you speak to the average person walking around in Toronto, or NYC, good chance they dont know where south africa is.

I disagree with you and I expect that I’ve been abroad a lot longer than you. Looking at non-anecdotal evidence, the link from the OP literally links to a study that says that South Africa has a higher misperception. Nearly 40 percent of working aged Americans have degrees, while only 6-7% of South Africans do. The average household income in SA is also less than a sixth.

Point being, that if you believe that a group of people with a lower misperception index, living in one of the biggest cultural melting pots in the world, who are both much wealthier and much more educated, know less about the world than the average South African, then you are actively proving my point right now.

Lots of my anecdote trumps your anecdote going on here.
