The plan to merge SAA's operations with Ethiopian Airlines

One of the proposed solutions to the problems at South African Airways (SAA) is to merge the company's operations with another major African airline, the Sunday Times reports.

According to an internal document written by former SAA CEO Vuyani Jarana and seen by the Sunday Times, SAA's best chance at recovery is to be free of government ownership and to merge with another major airline.

they are dreaming if they think any airline will partner with them, i'm sure that will drop any airlines shareprice instantly.
imagine the press statement: we announce that we've PROUDLY partnered with the failing airline SAA whose planes don't get maintained properly, and strike on the whim, come aboard and fly with us!

Why not Comair?
would they be interested? they have extensive routes in ZA and to/from ZA already with British Airways and Kulula, not much to gain by taking SAA aside from a ton of debt

even if Comair is interested though, guavamint wouldn't want to allow a monopoly to be established

Erm... Yet no major accident in the past 20 years or so?

there's a first time for everything, the past 20 years they were doing a good job, now they're not, running out of pilots and getting people with no experience to run things.

Ethiopian Airlines would be better off waiting for SAA to crash out and to fill its slots than buy this highly toxic asset.
Any airline wanting to partner with SAA will be dragged down with SAA to the lowest denominator.
SAA has been a failure since 2011, is a failure and ALWAYS will be failure, as long as its run by kickback cadres and zombie unions.

Our government has the curse of the Reverse Midas Touch.
Everything that was worth gold (profitable) has turned to poo, ever since they unleashed the evil socialist tokoloshe genie out of the calabash.

Well this is based on the assumption that Ethiopian Airlines would want to merge with SAA - which is highly doubtful.
Not a merger but it looks like there was a proposal on the table.
If South Africa asked Ethiopian to buy a stake, "we would consider it," Tewolde said.

Ethiopian and SAA are already partners in the Star Alliance.

The group had discussions with SAA's former Chief Executive Officer Vuyani Jarana before his resignation in May, Tewolde said. A deal may involve help with SAA's chronic debt problem, with banks withholding further loans until the airline can present a repayment plan for R9.2bn ($611m) of borrowings.

There's some merit in that but a lot is at play than just slots.
