Here's the reply for the Natal Planning team:

"Our current 2G coverage in Port Edward is provided by means of a share on the MTN mast. We did request permission from MTN to upgrade out Port Edward site to 3G last year.

Due to the structural analysis on the MTN mast indicating that the mast could not handle the extra wind-loading without overloading it, we were unable to proceed at this stage. We have indicated to MTN that we would like them to repair their mast to enable 3G to be installed there - until that is done, our hands are tied.

Furthermore, there were numerous requests to provide coverage to the area around the Wild Coast Sun and that is why that site was equipped - Port Edward was intended to be done simultaneously."

I think V3g should tell people here what a mission it is to put a mast up in this country. It might make people a little more tolerent.

I went to a site inspection once for a mast between Mossel bay and outshorn i think. Anyway we had to move the mast to the other side of the mountain raise it by 20m all because the enviromentalist saw a flower that was very rare were Vodacom wanted to build the mast.

True,

Site acquisition is probably the hardest part of rolling out the network.

Everyone wants coverage but no-one wants a mast in site.

The recent debacle in Constantia is a case in point, the residents stop the masts going up and then another set of residents form an on-line pressure group to get coverage.

Well rather simple really ... no mast ... no coverage then ... tell those hoi paloi in Constantia to suck on it.
And let's see how long those SUV driving soccer mom's will last without being able to blab on their precious cellphones :).

Crikey Moses, disguise the damn mast like a tree like the one we have by us. A pretty damn good job if you view it from a distance :)

From a recent press release:

"Constantia Property Owners' Association chairman Gary May says the poor reception is only in pockets, not throughout the entire leafy suburb of Cape Town.
He added it was an ongoing issue that no amount of plastic pine trees would address to everybody's satisfaction.
Even if they were disguised as pine trees, masts erected by the networks were offensive to many Constantia residents."

So, limited coverage.

Vodacom, just tell them to go to hell. The next time someone says they dont want it do this.

Tell them how correct they are, now they getting a 2 week trip to (<<insert location of choice here>> free from Vodacom.

While they gone put the tower up in their back garden disguised as a pine tree, those things do look real, he wont even notice :)

Just because he knows its coming he is stressed, if its there and he didnt know it, he probably wouldnt notice it. I have seen alot of them, they look fine to me.

IMO a better strategy would be to publish info alongside the coverage maps [on vodacom.co.za] - so that whenever someone wants to know why they have no coverage in their area, they will know which dumbass residents association to blame - call it a name & shame campaign. Same goes for council approval holdups - publically name & shame those causing holdups to progress in SA.

OK thats interesting. u SHARE the tower? as in 50/50? so techincally its HALF YOUR PROBLEM? So a little tower in a small town is in the way of a multi-billion Rand conglomerate? *scratches head* jee folks im sorry i didnt realise. what about another option? Vodacom has a tower thingy at the Lighthouse in Port Edward, cant they put it there?????? definately can support the weight. i mean it does weigh a couple tons isnt it? its not gonna blow over if u put a few gadgets on it is it? Or cant they just dig into their VERY DEEP POCKETS and erect a fake palm tree somewhere? i know of at least a dozen people in this town who would use 3G if it was here.... im still confuzzled that Vodacom could be so lax.

Once again, with an attitude like this, do you really think anyone is going to pay attention to you?

From posts above it is clear the tower belongs to MTN, and is not a 50/50 issue. See V3G and web's posts.

We've already seen you can't write properly. I can only assume your reading skills are also limited.

And sending me aggressive and abusive PM's, like you've done, only underscores the above.

As stated by the radio planners, this tower was scheduled for a 3G upgrade, but needs a physical tower upgrade. Unfortunately it's not a Vodacom tower, so no 50/50 ownership.

I'm pretty sure if the local guys could have used another location they would have done so.

u stated u SHARED the tower. u didnt say you USED their tower. So my town must go without 3G because Vodacom doesn't have its OWN tower in my town? Are the bean counters that stingy and wont let u build your own tower? I know of half a dozen places for a tower... If this happened in the middle of Sandton the world would stop spinning. but because its a small town you dont really give a continental. and my town isn't as Aflluent as Southbroom or Marina Beach. i will not stop my campaign. even if i have to email AKC himself. and Neo if you have a problem with my spelling: DEAL WITH IT i type in a hurry.
