Post Office quietly kills online licence disc renewals

The South African Post Office's (SAPO) online licence disc renewal service is no longer operational, and the company has told MyBroadband that it only launched as a proof of concept for an online system.

This is despite it saying the online service was its first step in turning the "SAPO in my Pocket" strategy into reality.

Nah, wasn't a POC... eNatis went and murdered a SAPO revenue stream by launching online renewals on their side.

I think that's a more accurate statement.

A parasitic zombie virus, plodding along pretending to be alive, but underneath is just the stench of death and decay.
I mean. A virion isn't a cell so it can't maintain stability. It can't grow. It can't make its own energy. They reproduce like mad though. They're not, by traditional definitions, alive.

Sounds a lot like SAPO to me. It definitely isn't stable. It can't grow. It can't make its own money. I'm sure there's plenty of "reproduction" happening on company time at SAPO... they're certainly not delivering parcels that's for sure.

Suppose you could argue SAPO does metabolise in the sense that it consumes parcels never to be seen again.

Not enough to say it's alive though. Not quite dead either...

Neither is the post office but they, the anc will still send you a fine through them.

Yeah, the only reason it seems to exist at this point is to keep its employees employed. What they do all day is a mystery, other than to pilfer the packages of people naive and dumb enough to still use their services.

Do they still send fines in the post? I wouldn't know because they stopped delivering mail in my area over a year ago and closed down all the PO boxes and post offices within a 20km radius of where I live. There literally is no way for me to get post so I would never know if I got a fine. Sometimes when I fill in a form that asks for a postal address I just enter "Don't bother" into the first field.

It states in here they do.

I don't know why they bother. If you post something to my street address I can 100% guarantee you I will never get it. I'm sure there are lots of other households in South Africa in the same position.

I remember my excitement as a child, receiving birthday cards with cash or cheques from aunties far away. I really thought it was the height of sophistication to have a postbox, and got a couple early on in my adult career before I realised it was irrelevant. Pretty sad that kids these days just don’t get to experience that. A WhatsApp call from Aunty and a cash deposit via EFT isn’t the same.

Or a Video Call

Have used the eNatis one twice now, super efficient, no reason to give SAPO any money or time anymore.

100%.

I used the SAPO one once, and it was a proper shyte show, had to threaten them with a chargeback on my card to get them to actually do anything. Have use eNatis twice now and smooth sailing.

We used them (eNatis) for our company for the first time yesterday. Paid about 10am and our license discs were delivered today at 1pm

Why the Post Office still exists as a viable entity is beyond my comprehension, the government loves looting money at our expense doesn't it.
