it's incredible to see how much more we are paying compared to the rest of the world.

HOLY CR....

I knew things were bad, but not that bad!

Were is the real problem here, is it the suppliers in SA, or is it the import costs the government is charging us all, Never mind the shipping costs which I know are also high. People say thats because we are so far away from the rest of the world, But isn't AU just as far, and they seem even cheaper than the UK?

Core should get stock from Apple at lower prices, being their official wholesaler. This means that Core should be paying less VAT. The shipping is not expensive. Core, being a regular importer, should have shipping discounts or Apple being a regular exporter should have shipping discounts. If Take2 can import something for pennies from Amazon, why is it so expensive for Apple/Core?

I think it's an issue of Core maximising their profits. They sell fewer computers at a higher margin. With fewer sales they have less problems with support issues. Their expenses drop and cost of sourcing new parts is less. They probably worked out that at the level of staff, workshop space and staff competencies - the volume they're pushing at these high prices maximises their revenue while minimising their expenses. With more Mac sales (Cheaper Macs), they'd have to rent more workshop premises, train and hire more staff, import more spare parts paid out of their own pocket, etc. Unless Apple allows for more AUTHORISED WHOLESALERS in SA or opens up shop in SA thus negating Core, we will be so screwed. Blame Core and especially blame Apple. Steve Jobs is 100% to blame for this.

Pisses me off that same macbookpro is SA is 10 grand more expensive than in the states. The markup is completely ridiculous!
Except it's more like R5k (for the 17" I'm looking at now) and thats before you take into account the taxes. Add 14% (you can blame the government as opposed to core for that) to the US price and it becomes R21 772.45 (US Store) vs R24,999.00 (ZAStore).

So yes we are paying a high margin, too high IMO, but it's not as bad as you seem to think.

A couple of weeks ago I paid $2,650.00 ($2,499.00 + Tax) in the US, which relates to R20,322.10

A saving of R4,677.00

I wasn't expected to pay Duty and VAT on entry at JNB because I'd been out of the country for more than six months, but if you get stopped on entry and asked to pay Duty etc. then you'll be losing.
Depending on where you're living there tax is often waved, esp on internet purchases - hence the popularity of online shopping there. The amount of sales tax also varies state to state which is why it's not advertised on prices.

I'd have to check but is there duty payable on computers?

I've paid on my wife's previous laptop (Samsung X05) , but cant remember if it was only VAT or Duty + VAT - I paid R700.00

I buy loads online, but with the MBP I decided it best to get it at a brick and mortar store just in case I need warranty and support - don't want to get into couriering it across the country. BestBuy didn't have stock, and still don't which leads to speculation that they are gearing up for a new model.
I bought mine from the Mac shop in large local mall.
There's obviously price control in the US, because every place I found advertised at $2,499.99

Did you buy it at an Apple store?

I hope new models are released soon. I've got an insurance claim coming through.

Yes, I bought at an Apple store - This one http://www.apple.com/retail/oxmoor/

There's a lot of chatter about the new model coming out soon - speculation that it will be the new i-series CPU's but not necessarily the i-7 quad
You wont find the MBP 17" on the BestBuy web site !

I was swayed to the MBP because every other 17" was far too "BLING" for my liking.

Just as a FYI - You can take any Mac to a Apple store for repairs, issues, etc, even ones you've purchased online through Amazon etc (which is where I do my apple shopping).

I'm hoping to downsize to the 15" after two generations (or more?) of the 17" model.

Good to hear , thanks.
I guess that helps me justify the high price.

I also buy from Amazon - they offer more protection in addition to what the credit card company offer, but when I was shopping for the MBP their prices were the same but would still need to add shipping.

Can't imagine that the new versions would come with a price hike - they are pretty pricey right now.

If you buy directly from Amazon, and not a partner etc, they usually give you free shipping on these big ticket items.
